Valve amps give a much better distortion and all round crisper sound. Most I think use a combination of the two but if you want to use the amps different channels then get valves. Unlike the old valves of yesteryear they don't blow every few hours.

Valve amplifiers have inherently higher distortion than transistor amps. They are often described as having a 'warmer sound', which is useful depending on what kind of music you listen to.

Choose your amplifier depending on that criteria; what you listen to.

What kind of hifi do you have?

Loud isn't always the way to go, when you play gigs and stuff 95% of the time you'll be going through their resident PA systems (often crap) so the volume will always be ok, even if it's just a 30w practice amp. Just try it out in the shop with the closest bass they have to what you play and see what sound you like the most.

My old bass player had a big fuck off Mesa Boogie stack that weighed about 78 billion tonnes and required the entire band to help shift it before and after gigs, but boy did it sound nice :)
