So they have finally figured it out, their cars use too much fuel. Only took them 20 years longer than the rest of the civilised world.

The thing is, engine size and cylinders aren't the biggest part of the problem which is the weight of the fucking cars in the first place. American car manufacturing is still 30 years behind Japan/Korea and Europe in many areas but especially in materials, lighter cars means less fuel but the American car companies just won't move with the times or invest enough to catch up. I had to laugh at this article...

DailyTech - Report: GM Midsize Sedans to Become "4-cylinder Only"

Fleet cars have to be able to deliver 34 miles to the gallon by 2016. What the fuck? How bad are the current cars if that is the new benchmark that the manufacturers are struggling to meet? No wonder the fat fuckers use more than 25% of world oil.

That is just mad. Even my 2.0l petrol car gets me 40-42mpg if I drive nice.

I'm currently averaging 46-47mpg in a Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 diesel estate. That's just driving normally, not trying to be economical. If I tried to be economical then I'm sure I could get 53-55mpg.

I'm wondering when car manufacturers will start adding the additional tank for AdBlue on ordinary cars. It's used on big diesel engine vehicles to knock the NOx down to more acceptable levels. What's interesting is that it's a 32.5% solution of urea in water. Farmers have been spreading watered down pig piss on their fields as fertiliser for centuries. Now it seems that the car industry wants to take the piss as well. :)

Look good and weigh 3 tonnes, fucking stupid that they can't build a car with the same look but on a much lighter chassis and using an aluminum body. If we in the EU can build great cars that deliver good performance and economy that weigh around 1-1.5 tonnes then why can't the Yanks. They have a mindset that if it is smaller than 2.5litres then it is weak, stupid ignorant fucks.

They won't be in a hurry to change this though. The thing about using old materials and making heavy petrol hungry cars is that they are incredibly cheap. European imports are only for the rich. The roads are typically Arrow straight and very smooth, so they don't need good handling or good suspension. The economy is largely based on selling oil and making cheap disposable cars.

Whichever way you look at it, at the moment Hybrids are going to be too expensive to work over there and electric cars are still very much a pipedream in realistic terms. The other thing to consider is that the V8, is as much a part of American society as the Big Mac.

I was in the US about eight years ago. I forget what make my hire car was, but it did 17 mpg, which I was told was pretty good.

You'd be surprised. A lot of Yanks run their cars on all sorts of biofuels.
