Following on from my thread in the general forum... what difference does it make if your PSU is 250W or 300W ?? (plz don't say 50W...) If the PSU is giving the correct voltage to the m/board & processor what's the wattage got to do with anything ??

Although Athlons generally require more power its also the use of Geforce gfx, multiple HDs etc that also draw a lot of power as well.

With the Geforce people had trouble with 200w PSU and thus suffered from various problems ranging from graphics problems to non startup.

A 250w might just do but yourpower supply won't have any head room and should there be a spike in power thus making your comp crash/etc.

I personally have a 350w supply with my setup:

Athlon XP 1800+
GeForce 3
3 HDDS
1 DVD-ROM
1 CDRW
Audigy
etc
etc.

You can try your 250w with a xp 1600+ but I would get the 300w just to be safe.

if i rember correctly your average Athlon is spec'd at 70watts (have a look on AMD's site for full specs for your cpu model)

then simply put, if your gfx, hdd's and whatever else you have in your box 'o tricks range between 5 and 50 watts or more. It kind of makes sense why PSU's are going up in wattage as the components that make up your PC are getting more power hungry

Plus, any sort of power flow spike/cock up a 300 - 350W PSU allows for a margin of error and trouble free usage
oh.. and if u overclock bits, more power = more wattage

if u have an old 200W lying about try it, but if your buying one, I'd go for a 300W min. as there's hardly any difference in price.

I think he has a 250w and doesn't want to spend more by the looks of it ;)

Korny, I have several regular athlons powered by 250W psus and they run just fine. thing is, both Embattle and Grimes are quite correct. use a low power psu and you won't be able to do cool stuff like sticking some fans/extra drive in etc etc without landing in [possible] wierdness.
for my main system I have a 350W psu.

Cool thx, I'll give the 250W a shot, if it gets weird, i'll get a 350 or 400 one...

Wehey!

I specifically got a 300w for my Duron 800/Geforce 2MX system - hopefully gives me plenty of headroom.

Yea I think its a good idea to go higher on the wattage. I just got a 400 watt for mine just beacause im not sure all im gonna be putting in it and since I have a ton of room in my sx1240 antec case ill probably be eating a lot of that wattage up.
