AMD's Athlon XP numbering scheme

Interesting summary from TheReg that doesn't rip chimpzilla up for once.

They are righ however, in that AMD can use a different rating number all they like to compare to intel chips, but with the P45 now reaching it's performance payback threshold (starts at 2.5ghz) AMD will be fucked unless they make a new product that can scale up like the P4

The P4 will scale up to around 10ghz in the long run, and we'll be seeing 3ghz or more parts by the end of 2002

Good article - Tom's was on about a similar idea - an independant panel who would compare chips and rate them against each other. The only problem is, can you see Intel going along with it?

TBH I just find P4s don't offer much more for the extra cost and I can't justify that kind of money.

The age old AMD argument... unfortunately Athlon XPs are considerably more expensive than previous Athlons, and Intel are incorporating a major price cut with Northwood's release... to the point that the PR rated Athlon XP will cost the same as the "true speed" Northwood. ie an Athlon XP 1800+ (1.5GHz core) will be priced the same as a 1.8GHz P4 Northwood. That, combined with the significant speed increase of Northwood (10% just from the increased L2 cache) and the fact that you'll be able to ramp the bus speed straight up to 533MHz a la Coppermine (so a 1.5 will run at 2Ghz without any extra cooling or voltage tweaks), and ironically you'll soon be saying "I just find Athlon XPs don't offer anything for the extra cost..."

I don't remember saying anything about the Athlon XP in this bit, yes I know they're going to cost more but atm I'll stick to the oridinary Athlon which matchs the P4 at the same speed and higher in most games/apps etc.

I'll wait for some more tests, later, before I decide how well the Athlon XP does against a P4 and weather it is considerably faster than the bog standard Athlon.

The 1.53ghz chip massively outperforms the P4 2ghz, for a much, much smaller cost. Go figure. :p

I've gathered my own opinion regarding bus speed of chipsets and different memories etc. It doesn't mean much in the real world and only seems to show major difference in benchmarks like Sisoft. The best chipset I've ever had was a BX based board, the Abit BE6-II...what a sex machine and it kept going to :)

My next chip is more likely to be an Athlon XP than a P4 mainly because I don't want to buy new memory and a new mobo just to use a P4, its what bugged me about P3 stopping at 1Ghz meaning a change was required.

I'm still using my BE6-II with P3-1gig. Lovely mobo that is :D

The P4 currently maxes out just above the 2gig mark. The Athlon XP is probably near enough maxed out with just a couple of extra grades maybe. Currently the XP outperforms the P4. The P4 will get faster because it is going to .13 micron. The Athlon will do the same but a little later. Is it not likely that AMD will increase the L2 cache on the Athlon just like Intel is doing with the P4 and get a little speed boost too ? The only advantage Intel would have then is the 133 bus speed (not 533, that would melt :))
which AMD will probably attempt to counter by increasing theirs to 166 which will give a little boost there.

All in all both companies have moves they can use to keep increasing performance. The idea that one of them is gonna run away with the performance crown by a mile is dumb. As long as both companies are interested in fighting for the speed title they aren't going to let the other get too far ahead.

End of...
