AMD XPs Question

Does anyone keep their AMD XPs running 24/7 and is it safe?

I remember the older TBirds had a tendancy to ignite on occasions.:)

they only ignited if you didn't use a fan m8 ;) or maybe custard instead of arctic silver :p

sure they're perfectly safe fella - I know plenty of companies who use them in their servers which run 24\7\365

Thanks. Im nervous because I read somewhere that they didnt have a temp cut out switch thingy like the pentiums, so that if the fan failed they just kept running till they caught fire.

Your M/B should have a bios setting for that. Mine does, I can tell it so that if the CPU reached 75(for example) it would shutdown. If the Fan fails on mine it wont even boot, just beeps :D I think your M/B will be similar :)

I have 3 Athlon XP's and a Duron running 24/7, and I've not had any melting yet.

One of the boxes does keep my feet warm though.:)

only in the last couple of months has AMD included thermal cutoff in the spec for athlon-xp compatible motherboards...

Yeah but that doesn't mean the m/b wont have one! Every one I've owned from my T-Bird TO XP has had this feature. And they are very much cheap budget M/B's! guess i'm just lucky :)

that's a bios cutout when your CPU gets hot, set by the user and can be disabled too (some boards disabled as standard)

the new spec means a board kills the power when the CPU reaches the thermal threshhold for that particular clockspeed - something you can't intervene on.

Yes, that would be some of Mr Pabst's "load of old bollocks" you've been looking at again.

Technically correct, the Athlon cutout is in the mobo, if you run an approved AMD mobo you'll be as safe as any Intel crap.

I keep my Athlon "C" 1.3Ghz running 24/7, no problem. Windows keeps it on a regular reboot cycle but its been weeks since the last "hard" power off.
