I like my AMD processor, but this is taking the piss. I don't want Intel-equivelant model numbers, and poncy names. Take it away, AMD...

Hot Spot - How Modern Processors Cope With Heat Emergencies

This wan an expriment conducted by TomsHardware

http://www.streamgate.de/filer_test/tomshardware/THG_CPU_Cooling.zip (9mb)

Get that video. It shows how the Pentium 4, the Pentium 3, the thunderbird, and the Palomino all compare in terms of heat emergency (fan failure, HSF mounting clip failure etc)

The Pentium 4 heat diode logic slows the P4 down to reduce the sudden burst of heat....the PC keeps running fine with no hardware damage at all.

The Pentium 3 heat diode logic switches the CPU off to protect itself - application freezes but all hardware is saved

The Thunderbird actually catches fire after 2 seconds destroying the CPU and motherboard (CPU reaches a temperature of 370c LOL)

The Palomino (WITH heat diode logic on chip, AND the heat logic supporting motherboard (Siemens' D1289 with VIA's KT266 chipset)) Catches fire in 1 second destroying the cpu and motherboard (CPU reaches a temperature of 300c LOL)

What makes me laugh is how AMD think the Athlon MP will actually suffice as a business solution. They need to make a proffessional product first

lol quite true Perplex :)
I happened to know about this btw, and I was rotfl I assure you hehe. I guess we know what AMD will be putting in their next batch of cores :)

Still, I personally don't give a damn that I happen to have a non-flame proof evil AMD cpu tho, and I will buy another one just as fast. Imho, if you managed to get your heatsink to break off then your entire pc will have been fuxored by shock-damage anyway.
One would have to be a really really hardcore gamer/totally wasted not to realize you'd just shoved your pc off your ruddy desk aiiiii :D

Yeh, but Perp's point about businesses is valid. For most home users the great value kind of offsets the extremely small risk you're at but an extra couple of hudred squid aint much to a business.

If it fell off then the plastic hooks on the socket would of broken any way meaning the Mobo is fooked.
