Anyone here with an Athlon XP 2000 + and play Q3? if so what sort of fps are you getting? also what gfx card are you using along with it?

I have just bought a new machine, my gf4 hasnt arrived yet but i've connected everything up and after a few hours of cunting about its up and running but im having to use my gf2 mx pci, fps is near enough 125 solid but im just curious what others get as i did expect it to do more, obviously the gf2 pci is the bottleneck but i'd like to know what to expect when scan fucking deliver my gf4.

I have a amd 2200xp iirc, with a gf4 ti4800se and get 280fps in demo four. That's with a certain amount of tweakage, but nothing excessive.

I currently have a xp2.0 with a gf4 4400 and get solid 125 all the time.
The last time I ran a timedemo it avaraged about 210 fps ,with bullet eject off and no smoke trails.

Sounds promising then for when my gf4 arrives :D

You have 280 fps and still need to tweak?

WHY?

You must have had 200 + without tweaking.

And the eye cannot perceive anything beyond 60 frames per second (just as well when Doom III comes ;)) :D

60 frames per second
...so they say...however, try turning the mouse really quickly...you should be able to tell the difference beyond 60 fps.

FPS....xp1800+ ATI Radeon 8500 (thats 64 meg) ...I play capturestrike with all the trimmings @ 1024x768 and typically fps >100 consistently, sometimes peaking at 200 and beyond.

125 fps is the default for q3. XCant remember (twiddling my mouse at hifgh sppeed has addled my brain).....use /com_maxfps 300 or more in console  if that dont work try /cg_maxfps (anyone ???)

What nonsense you speak ... :(

Obviously not an on-line gamer methinks.

What nonsense you speak

I dont think that is (or I was being) entirely fair....most of the benefit from 100+ fps is psycological.....you have to try REALLY hard to be able to percieve the difference. And to my mind 50% of game winning is psyological in say q3. In fact screen flickers and framerate differences at the high end are probably only percievable in most cases when you have neon lights on and you get interference (this is how the guy in the tv shop will send you a 100 Hz TV...when in reality there is no way you can percieve the difference in 50 to 100 Hz) :/

Aww, come come, play nicely :) Yes, I was over generalising, and there is no distinct threshold, but I merely meant to say that hundreds of frames per second isn't the be all and end all. id demonstrated DOOM III quite happily running between 30-50 fps

Sorry if I upset you :(

No I don't need to tweak, but my config is years old now and I am so used to it that small changes can take a long time to adjust to. Certain texture and detail levels have been 'upped' since the upgrade, but some are barely noticable, so not worth switching on.
It's true that the eye may not be able to distinguish between 200 and 280 fps, for example ....... but in q3 it's also true that there is a relationship between max_packets and fps. Consistancy of fps can have an impact upon the general 'smooth feel' of the game, in terms of fps and game updates/lag/response times.

Basically though, I'd rather have 280 fps and find it dropping to 200 when being spammed by a few enemies plasma/lightning guns, than have 150 and having it drop to 100.

Certainly in terms of q3, fps is important not only from a graphics point of view, but also in terms of the com_maxfps and maxpackets formula.

Well you can somewhat. I have my monitor at 85Hz and if I turn it down 60Hz I can definately see and feel a difference, mainly due to the holes being burned into my eyes :D

But that is in windows.. I don't see any difference at all when games bump my refresh down to 60Hz.

nice article, and its a funny thing.....I have been finding recently that movies in the cinema are unpleasantly blurred

The fact is that the human eye perceives the typical cinema film motion as being fluid at about 18fps, because of its blurring.

now I know I play q3 too much

Lol Jonty you havent upset me at all mate. However if you really think there is no difference between 60 fps and 125 fps when playing q3 online I can only assume you have never played q3 online ;)

With regards to Q3A, you'd be right, I play offline mostly :) And when I do play online, my ping usually comes it at around 7-10 on UK servers due to the connection I play over :)

Kind Regards

I'd rather have a steady 100 fps and no drop which is why I limit it even though mine goes up to 280ish with me Radeon.

125fps is the "ideal" im told, and why I limit mine to that figure . It will go faster but as you say, will not be as smooth as the frame rate goes up and down.

Ah yes, don't get me wrong ...... this is a timedemo result only. I cap at 200, with 100 maxpackets (although have to exec other cfg's on servers where maxpackets are capped).
