Since I've been considering buying a PIII 700Mhz I've noticed that its almost as cheap to get a new mobo and 700Mhz Athlon processor for about the same amount, hmmm.

Athlon systems - they either work brilliantly or they don't work at all - that's my conclusion after messing with various athlon based platforms in me old job.
I'd stay with intel personally... just wish this PIII 650 I just got actually overclocked more than 100MHz over standard

Get a Coppermine, they're top notch at standard speed, and they clock like a very clocky thing (if you're into that kind of thing: I couldn't be bothered myself)

Well mines a coppermine but it ain't a very overclockable one :/
the older katmai cores go upto 600 only.
