I recently got burgled and a laptop was pinched.

It was a dell p4 2.6 533FSB machine about 18 months old. The insurance company have came back with an offer for the cheapest laptop dell sell saying 'its quicker than your old one'.

They are offering a p4 1.7m. 400fsb

Im pissed because when i bought the laptop it was one of the top available at the time and now they want to give me the bottom available.

How do I articulate to these scumbags that what they are offering me is worse than what i had ?

thanks

It may actually be faster. The fact it's a 400 FSB Pentium M system suggests to me it's a dual channel job? In other words, it's effectively an 800mhz FSB.

Pentium Ms are also very nice, fast chips. Was your original lappy an actual Pentium 4, or was it a Celeron?

I think the point is not if what they are offering is faster but what would be the equivilent in todays market.

To give an analogy. if you had your car pinched and it was a 3 year old top of the range job and they offer to replace it with a brand new base model because 'it has electric windows etc' as standard now.

edit: this is the CPU they are offering > Intel® Pentium® M Processor 735A (1.70GHz 2MB L2 cache 400MHz FSB)

I'm trying (without success) to find some performace comparison charts that show this against my old P4 2.66

Argue for a better laptop IMO, I got my Dell nicked last year and I ended up with a better one. If the one they offered you was a centrino 1.7 your better off but if it's a p41.7 like u said then go back to them. Don't get a an M or a P4 imo.

Centrino's kick arse, also tell em u had upgaded the ram :p

If lots of stuff got nicked and you provide receipts for MOST of it they will maybe overlook a few things that you cannot provide receipts for ;)

My whole office got broken into took 1x PC and a lappy. I had built the comp and the laptop was one i'd bought from somewhere, about 8 months previous. After much argueing they gave 90% value of the laptop, coming up from under 50% and gave full value of PC. Eventually spent all the money on building a single desktop :D

Insurance company's like to take the piss, phone them up and blag, lie, cheat and shout and you may get somewhere or you might not worth a shot though
