Always wondered about the odd frame dropouts in DAoC

I know most people seem to get this (well people I asked) but wondering why it's happening after so long still. It seems to be an obvious graphical programming glitch.

Anyway, the problem. Some places or objects drop my frame rate down to about 5 fps, even thoiugh there's often nothing significant there or nothing at all.

In ToA if I go to Stygia and then look to the left hand side of the Temple on the water, I get massive frame drop. If I look at the Caravans in NF, I get massive frame drop. And if I look at some bridges, or towers, from one direction I get it but not the other. I can be looking at one tree on the East of Boldiam and get 1 frame per second, then I look at the keep in all its glory and it runs fine!

What the hell!

Badly coded game engine i'd say

Pretty generalized explanation i know, but thats what it boils down to imo.

I used to get this with various textures. Lava in DV for example would drop my framerate to about 5fps if it was in view. If I turned so I couldn't see it all was fine. At the time I was running a GeForce 5600FX card. I upgraded to a 6600GT and it's been fine ever since. No idea whether it was new drivers or new hardware that cured the problem.

Aye, it's just shite. It's only since Catacombs came out so it has to be down to some "optimising" they did when they patched that out.

Yep, I always wondered what the hell made the fps drop in aerus when u watch the ocean. There is absolutely nothing to see. If u turn arround and face the city, fps return to normal.

Oh well. It's not that FPS is that important in RPGs anyway :)

it is a memory leak when looking at certain graphics, normally due to bad coding.
