Anyone got some preliminary info on the investment necessary to get these skills to a useable level?

Spellcrafting cost (reply)

Last thing I heard was around 17 Plat. (For spellcrafting)

AFAIK its no use getting more than skill 800 in spellcrafting because items cannot hold more than around 38 imbue points.

More SC skill equals better chance of overcharging. Nuff said. 1k+ is a must for the rich people's imbues.

How can you not get tempted to try and overcharge????

when you don't have 60 plat to spare on replacing blown-up equipment? :)

That's exactly why you want a high Spellcrafter to imbue your stats. Because he has a better chance to get a successfull imbue on an overcharge, and he can imbue more stats on an item without having to overcharge compared to a lower Spellcrafter.

failed overcharges don't damage the item. Think they probably destroy the gems being used, but not the actual weapon/armor piece being imbued.
Mythic's spellcraft calculator can very easily show you what %chance of overcharge success you have. Note that gem quality affects nothing except overcharge success chance...

Specifically, the master spellcrafter will have the option of “overcharging” an item, or imbuing an item with up to 5 more Spellcrafting imbue points than its capacity to hold. The problem here is when you overcharge something… that overcharge goes somewhere. Sometimes in an extremely violent matter. The item may explode. The crafter may explode. Both may explode. So far a customer hasn’t yet exploded, as that would be bad for repeat business.

That's from the Herald.

the 'item' the guide refers to, is the spellcrafted gem(s) with the magical properties you are imbuing. Mythic thankfully realised that it would be too insanely frustrating if you lost a masterpiece item to a failed overcharge. Esp. if you had worked it out properly and been given a 15% chance of the overcharge failing...

You CAN lose everything. As in gems, items and crafter blowing up. But the chances are weighted towards that the crafter blows up before the items do.
