Many types of explosive (including the ones used by the Christmas Day bomber) don't show up on these scanners, if you look online you can find many examples of people going in front of these scanners with stuff on them that can blow up a plan and it not showing up. They are just another invasion of our civil liberties and won't do anything really to stop terrorism.
