Ok so i need to go and get my camera repaired. Its lense issue (used to stick on the way back into the camera, when changing zoom settings) has now become permamnent and stops the camera taking pictures at all.

The electronics are fine and working, its just an issue with the zoom motor / gears. Im guessing its going to be expensive.

Is it best to take it into a sonycenter shop (as its a sony cybershot) or somewhere like jessops. If anyone else has done similar repairs what sort of price tag am I looking at?

It doesn't matter where you take it, they'll send it off to Sony to be repaired. Best to ring Sony, get the address of their nearest service centre, and pop it in the post.

Beware that home insurance policies don't tend to cover cameras etc, just in case you're thinking of chucking it out of the window heeheh
