Has anybody been in the position of being married with a baby and then been sacked? If so could you relay your experiences with the benefits system.

Sacked is different to redundant, but when I was made redundant in 1990 I had two small children and a wife, and although things were rough, fucking rough, we didnt end up on the street :)
The first thing to organise is accomodation, I lived in a council house at the time, so the first thing to do was to let the council know, and that was then sorted. Same with the council tax.
Basically the best thing to do is let everyone you owe money to know the situation as soon as possible, and get down the jobcentre to register for unemployment. You can also get various benefits for children etc, so Im sure it will be ok.
Shouldnt be too difficult to get a job in this day and age, good luck :)

not been married, but living with partner.

Ya benefits are gonna depend on yr specific circumstances ie.

Were you paid any redundancy money or other payments in-lieu?

Have you paid enought national insurance to claim for contributions based Jobseekers allowance? (maximum claim 6 months)

Does your partner work less than 25 hours a week? (income based JSA)

Other stuff to try and claim for from the tax office rather than the benefits agency.

Working families tax credit.
Child benefit.
Child tax allowance. (or summat like that)
Housing & Council Tax benefit (forms from your local council)

prolly other stuff too that they don't/won't tell you about. Its worth pressing them a little harder to find out.

I just spent 9 months out of work after being employed in the same job for 14 years and its a grim situation to find yourself in. Fortunately I had a payout from NTL when they made me redundant that helped with "lean" times and also had unemployment insurance on my mortage and loans, however these take ages to begin to payout and you have to provide evidence of your job searches else they hold back on the payments.
Just some stuff to consider.

Good luck with finding a new job, and keep at it no matter how many applications you send never get replied to.

easy to get a job these days

no offence:

bollocks...

clearly you love in some great part of england or scotland or something where jobs are abundant... that is not the case where i live... :/

anyway, i'm overqualified for loads of stuff, that's why i get turned down mostly... the stuff i am ideally qualified then, there's a dearth of.

thank god for the dvla... may have started on the bottom rung, but i've been selected to deputise for the grade above (once they get a break in the training cycle), and am currently applying for a job in the grade above that...

The job market is rather slack every where, fathead :p

The benefits system can be slow sometimes, a cousin of mine was once on it.

benefits..

u go to the job center, u agree to be actively seeking work.
sign some papers, go in every 2 weeks sign ur name, get money.

for a couple with kids u get more money.

after 6 months of no work, they stick you on a thing called new deal. 2 weeks of intesive job search and career development. then 6 months of training, or actual work environment task thing.

im doing 6 months training thing now in cisco. while getting paid 100 summat a fortnight.. it aint much but it will do me

I know, lets get an undervalued qualification in a job field that's virtually imploding.

That'll be sure to get you a job!

Only slightly, instead you could be getting qualified to do something that'd help you get a job.

..

i can actually respect both clowneh AND scoobah's points on this...

the qualification is likely to do you no good in the end... but yes at least you are getting off your arse and doing something...

Being in IT really sucks at the moment, especially since many large companies (even m$) have started outsourcing to inida etc

I'm even a bit concerned that why I finish my Computer SCience degree the amount of work will be sparse.

Thinking ahead I decied to do a year in industry then do my last year to hopefully give me that edge.

Also I've begun writing graphics demos as I'd like to get inbto the games biz even though the money isn't superb, job satisfaction is a high priority for myself

Bit ot:

You can go into a more general job after taking computer science though? Just like many people take chemistry/physics whatever, and then dont take a place in a chemistry/physics related job?

True but I actually enjoy programming at times, especially inopengl I get a buzz when I achieve some new fancy effect, or when something does what I want it to do.

I wouldn't mind being a manager of people though hmmmmmmmmmmm
