I´ve never been on the Oktoberfest myself, but I´ve been in Munich a couple times. Things you should definitly visit is the "Deutsches Museum". There´s an awful lot of interesting stuff to see there, enough for 2-3 days. And the "Alte Pinakothek", which is a museum for art.
The typical bavarian beer isn´t very good, at least that´s my personal taste. But give a "Weizenbier" or "Weissbier" (same thing, different name) a try, you´ll find it in every pub in Bavaria. It´s pretty tasty. (Oh.. if you want to order one of those beers, just say "Ich möchte diesen Teppich nicht kaufen".. and you´ll get one. Ok, that´s an insider joke.. only germans will understand :)).
For food, I´d recommend either fried chicken (you can´t go wrong with that) or "Haxen" (baically a chunk of meat from the leg of a cow or pig.. depends). It´s got everything you need for a long night of drinking...salt, fat and well.. stuff to fill up your stomach. Quite tasty too. Avoid the typical bavarian saussages, they taste like cat food.
To relax, visit the "English Garden". It´s a huge park with lots of (mostly naked) sunbathing people.

Hey Cho,

Be prepared for expensive food and drink in Munich mate. It is a great town and the Oktober fest is madness. You'll want to visit the Hoffbrauhause (Biggest drinking hall in europe/world or something along those lines) - it's massive but during lunchtime full of tourists and locals. You'll be drinking out of Steins alot (1 litre glasses, but with no lid - don't order any other type of beer as it is considered a womans size). The Bavarians drink their beer in a special way. If you want to fit in whilst drinking you're beer (bah i can't remember the German name for it) you should lift your glass from the table, bang it back down slightly then lift your elbow to your arm is level with your shoulder and drink, then bang it back down on the table and wipe your mouth. You'll see alot of the locals doing it that way, it's good fun :) Don't drink you're beer with 2 hands either (it is quite heavy with glass + beer) as it is also seen as being a womans way to drink. (I don't mean to be offensive when i say womans way of drinking, it's just the old Bavarian way)

As Thorwyn said Weissebeer is a very popular drink in Bavaria, i personally hate it however and order "Ein Herfoder Pills" - tastes much better imo. Typical food is meat and lots of it :D Don't eat the white meat mate, it's disgusting but the Bavarians love it.

Sights to see it's worth looking around town at the Rathause (town hall) and there is a nice auction house. I've also heard good things about the Museum but i've never been. That's about all i know on the sights, i spend most of my time drinking when i visit Munich not looking around ;)

Nice info, thanks Asmo :)

I have been discussing the trip with my friends this morning and one of them has expressed concerns about the price. It seems all transport, accomodation and food/drink prices get ramped up through the roof, we didn't want to spend more than £200 or so for 3 days and that just doesn't look viable going of what Asmo has said and what I read on various other sites. £5+ for a stein isn't so bad but £100 for travel on coach and £70 for accomodation for 2 nights is bloody hefty all things considered.

One of the guys suggested the Ostend Beer Festival which is alot cheaper and faster to get to, which leaves more time and money for drinking. The problem I have with that is I have read that the Ostend festival is not even quarter the size of Oktoberfest in Munich, one friend said that might not be a bad thing as Munich is supposed to be utterly hammered during that month but I am not convinced Ostend is for me.

Munich is the most boring town I've ever seen (ok, I wasn't there during the Oktoberfest).

Worth a look? Well. The Marienplatz looks nice, but it's empty at 1am and I only found a few homeless sitting around there (wow rox, such a big city dead at 1am).

If you're looking for good beds, try looking for the Wombat's hostel (www.wombats.at). They're pretty new and they offer superb rooms for not much money (nice and bright rooms, shower and WC in your room, not smth on the floor for all or such crap =) ) and they have a Bar aswell =) But if you want smth to sleep at, go book very soon cause it's gonna be full as hell.

EDIT: Ohhh, what Garaen said, das Deutsche Museum is ofc worth a look, but it's so huge, you'll need multiple days to see everything =)
