Not sure if this has been discussed before or not, but whilst playing MxO beta this morning after a patch i found this....

So now the question,

Is this blatant advertising by Warner Brothers or is it adding realism to the game?

I'm worried about advertising like this where reality and virtual worlds combine. How far can this go? In a MMORPG you could walk into a tescos and order your goods for real life... pop into blockbuster and get some vids for the evening all without leaving the gaming world?

Is this just going to enhance the addictive quality of games?

I guess its kind of realism since you get billboards etc in real life.

Is the game any good though? :)

As someone who works in the advertising industry I'm quite surprised this hasn't happened to a much larger degree already.

Gamers are a very specific target demographic; and on balance fairly cash-rich in terms of their disposable income (and therefore perfect audiences for everything from consumer electronics to brand re-inforcement).

It is only a matter of time before ads start appearing far more readily in-game. The amount of money a publisher could get for allowing the likes of loading screens to be augmented to include adverts (if there is one universal truth it's that at some point you will be sat in front of your screen waiting patiently for something to load up) would be substantial if done properly.

So long as ads that appear in the actual game environment don't detract from the experience, and are properly managed, I can see the day in the relatively near future when companies are regularly assigning marketing budget to ensure their product(s) or brand(s) appear in front of gamers whilst they play.

/pizza is a stroke of unparalleled genius. I demand it is implemented in every single game I play.

They just need to get the /pizza to work so you dont have to go to the webpage i.e. do all the ordering via the command line and it would be perfect for the kind of gaming nights that MMO's can bring.

As to advertising in games... where is the harm in it? You get it already to a degree, EA titles springs to mind. Also if it means that the publisher gets more money then it hopefully will mean either cheaper games or better funded games.

If they add /catheter then mmo players will never need to leave the house!

Awesome!

Getting to the door to get your pizza, while attached to the catheter, could be a bit tricky.

Its about time. They've been talking about this for years, but its only recently with MMOs becoming more mainstream that it starts to make sense. Personally, so long as an ad appears in context (While I'd be happy to walk into a virtual Pizza Hut in The Matrix Online, it would be a bit fucking lame in WoW for instance), I think its fine.

Purlease.....

Anyway, the pizza thing is pure genius and I love where it takes the genre. The next gen consoles will drive game dev costs far higher if a company wants to actually use the full potential of the machine and i doubt punters will be willing to pay the price directly, so indirect revenue like advertsing billboards, which are fine in context, are going to continue and probably with more purpose.
Adverts that popup or are out of context or intrusive wont be tolerated.
Well, they might be, but not by us i suspect.

Or god forbid Durex on these forums?

I feel very strongly that this shouldn't be limited to MMORPG. I have always thought that what de_dust really needed was a good chippie or a Kebab shop.

Bollocks does it... it needs a MFI on the terrorist side so the damn camping snipers can buy themselves somewhere cosy to sit.

In the right context it will be good. For example, an advert that is beneficial to the gamer. Otherwise it will become as despicable as I, Robot and Blade 3.

The pizza idea would have been good if it wasnt a shitty /command.

A pizza shop somewhere in the matrix however might have been quite a good gimmick and fairly useful at the same time.

I wanna order pizza while playing online games. :(

Or.... you could just alt tab open your favourite's which is linked to Domino's online ordering.... then order a decent pizza and not fall prey to their stupid advertising gimmick.

If you could do /pizza hawaiian and it comes in 30minutes automatically debited then it might be impressive.

they could integrate the pizza cost into the game subs so you type /pizza chickentikka [special pizza password] and it just looks up all the relevant details and squirts the order thru to the local PH - beuty.

I personally have no problem with it. We advertise our LAN Parties and our clan server facilities as permanent wall sprays on our CSS public Servers. We have not had any complaints.

On a larger scale if it means that next gen games for PS3, XBOX2, High Spec PC's remain the same price whilst it is better looking, Better AI, and better game play is it a bad thing ? I mean the games industry is on a par with overall spend compared to the movie industry and that is awash with blatant advertising and product placement

The more commercials come a standard in mmorpgs and games in general, the cheaper the games and monthly fees will come.

Atleast it would be a smart move. Take the server costs etc(that the players play monthly now) from adds placed in the games.

You could even put theaters in games where people could go watch movie trailers and such.

Ahahahahahaha! (ooh, I think I've pulled a muscle.) Ah, you naive young padawan you :) Posted on the very forum that grew from the ashes of Barrysworld, a site that thought it could do free gaming by raising ad revenue.

The best you could ever hope for is that ad revenue helps offset rising dev and support costs keeping prices where they are; 'free' (or even very cheap) multiplayer gaming supported by ads is an oxymoron; any decent quality game would be overwhelmed by the number of freeloaders, thereby breaking the economics, especially as gamers (e.g. young males) are notoriously bad at responding to any advertising.

For free war stories on the economics of online gaming, me, Ted or Deebs would be happy to sit at the fireside talking about the good old days :)

I sad it WOULD be a good move for a massive to be without monthly costs, and this could help it. Never meant that all games would be totally free. As in, load them from the net free and play free.

Ofcourse the reality is that the producers of games(not developers) are more likely to get money from adds and keep the prices still on the same level, just to make more cash.

I realise that you might have misunderstood the point as i didn't really put it clear that i meant massives(big budget games) since that's where this advertising is taking place. That was my bad.
