aDSL woes

Alright here is the story: I just got my DSL line connected today. It is advertized to be 640k download and 256k upload. I'm wondering why in the hell I'm only downloading in the low 20kb/sec range when I look at a download. What gives...I was expecting something around 60-80ish atleast. This is only like 3-4 times faster than my 56k connection. I'm not sure if I didn't set something up right...or if my isp is just screwed up. I'm running the Nortel Networks 1-meg Modem HSA into a Linksys wireless router. The router is physically conected to my dad's computer (running win98) via an ethernet cable and a Linksys NIC. I have a Linksys wireless pci card in my box (running winXP). The router and wireless stuff is set up correctly...I just don't know why it's so slow....maybe a software thing that I didnt' do right? The linksys software says my wireless connection and my signal quality are both excelent (100%). And just to be on the safe side I hooked up the modem straight to my dad's computer without the router and still got the same 20-30kb/sec download rates.

Ok so what are your thoughts?

Here are my system specs just incase they are needed:

AMD Athlon Thunderbird "AXIA" core 1ghz @ 1425mhz
Iwill KK266-R mobo
2x20 IBM Deskstars 60gxp's in raid 0
Leadtek Winfast 32mb GeForce2 GTS/Pro (det 23.11)
Linksys Wireless PCI card
384mb Crucial pc133 @ 150 mhz cas2 w/ 4 bank interleave

Modem is a Nortel Networks 1-Meg Modem HSA and the router is a Linksys 4 port wireless.

I know all the physical connetions are correct...but other than that I could use some help.

Yes you should get about 60K/sex at least but it's guaranteed esp in the US where from what I hear the different service provides and different areas can range in performance. I reckon you'll have to talk to your provider since as you said, you took it out and tried it connected directly to your dads comp.

You could give the relevant patch from this page http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml a go and see if that helps.

Yeah...I tried the patches at speedguide and it helped a bit. I also downloaded download accel. and it helped somewhat. I'm still getting an average of like 30kb/sec though (and that's if it's good) even with the tweaks. And...for some reason I can't log onto half life based servers...wtf?

I'm gonna call and bitch...the thing is I've been tinkering with computers for a while...I've built my system, my fathers, and a couple of others. Hehe...and I know how to follow directions... so I don't really think anything isn't hooked up right. I think my ISP juck sucks. I called today and the lady is really nice but she doesn't know shit. I'm like "so when I download a file I only get a download rate of like 20kb/sec" and she's like... "huh what's that...and then she reiterates how it's up to 640k down blah blah blah. What supprises me is since I'm only like half a mile if that from the switching station that they are using....I should be getting good speeds.
