ADSL Router/Firewall/Gateway/Modem/Whatever

In short, I require a NAT capable ADSL modem/router which is compatable with BtOpenworlds network ( ive heard you cant just buy any adsl modem ). It will be taking the place of my routing freebsd box ( its problems with my pishy fishy alcatel modem are taking its toll )

Ive been taking a great interest in the NetGear DG814 DSL Modem Internet Gateway , which has a 4port 10/100 autosensing hub, fully NAT firewalled ( port forwarding, bandwidth management etc ). IMHO, it looks rather sexy, sounds rather sexy, and the price is rather sexy too.

So, i'd like advice on which modems/routers are good ( A price limit of around £200 ) while keeping in mind the following requirements.

  • Has DSL modem supporting BtOpenworlds network ( PPoE ( i think ))
  • Must be external, with seperate power supply
  • 10/100 4port(min) hub/switch
  • NAT functionality
  • Port forwarding
  • Firewall
  • Prefered to be autosensing
  • Price limit of £200

Id especially like more detail on the NetGear DG814 as this is my current favourite.

cheers

Yeah - auto updates to the virus protection and system patches, etc. Well impressive piece of kit.

It's auto-notified me (via the Gucci LED's) of six attempts to upload NetBus to my network, giving me source IP's, etc.
It's only been running 14 hours too ! My old Linux firewall just told me everything was a 'port scan' - this seems to give more accurate info.

Smurf / Nuke IP - what a fantastic utility.

Any more of your *probing* TDC, and I'll activate the 'Send 10 million volts to source IP' module on my new toy :)

I think that the BT DSL network is PPPoATM, though I have not a clue what that stands for. Google just tells me how it patch my Linux kernel to support it, not what it is. (and I don't even have a Linux kernel to patch atm).

And a handy list of modems isn't to be had. The closest I've been is the router I currently have, Netgear RT314, which is good but I wouldn't recommend it when I have heard better reviews of Linksys routers.

But again, you want it with a DSL modem built it.;)
