ADSL probs with OS type

Well I keep coming back here for advise on my system and I usually get the answer I'm looking for... so here I am again

I am using Nildram ISP, and I am currently having problems with my line which I have been trying to sort out since the start of Jan this year... they dont know if its BT or them thats fucked things up, so soon I'll be looking for a new ISP...

Anyways: recently I upgraded my entire pc to the following,
asus A7V8X
athlon xp 2700+
512 mb ddr 400
80 gb hdd 7200rpm/133

This is the problem I'm having:
Win 98 - adsl modem installs fine - I get the 60 KB/s I'm meant to be getting but then the line drops continually (Nildrams problem - still dealing with it)
Win ME - same as 98
Win 2000 - installs fine - but I only get 8 KB/s max and line drops continually
Win XP - same as 2000 above

I'm using the latest drivers for the modem that I got off the USR website.

Now I don't understand this, its a damn good modem, never had probs before... and now this..

Is this an OS problem, or can this be line related? I'm hoping that 2k and XP will work once Nildram sorts their shit out.

Personally, i'd wait until Nildram sort out their shit first - i've heard of some real serious problems with Nildram recently. Keep an eye on here for discussions about it. IIRC, most of the probs were sorted out.

I'm with Pipex and they used to have hopeless download speeds (about 10k a sec, similar to your 8k per sec) too, but it was a well known problem regarding MTU settings. ADSLguide posted a thread here with solutions on how to fix various slow speed problems.

It turns out that my MTU was set to 1500, so i changed it to the recommended 1458 [iirc] and i'm now back to 60k/sec and 20ms pings. Cheers Pipex.

Yeah... I'm with Nildram and I keep getting those random cut off's (just ask Kippa, I'm bobbing in and out of IRC all the time of late)... To be honest I've noticed more problems since they installed the new pipes... my pings have dropped massively but now I get randomly cut off and drop right out of the game....

I hope they get it sorted!

Since I joined Nildram my pings have gone from 18-24 solid to 24-32ish. Not a huge rise I know but still it's annoying. They're getting too popular now so will prolly be time to move on soon.
