ADSL ISP - does it make a big difference?

My area is finally getting adsl broadband activated by the 1st of October. I'm on ISDN atm and the isp i use makes a huge difference, i guess the same is true of adsl?

Nildram seems to be quick (at least according to some comparison site i found) but not the cheapest. Pipex seemed to be cheap and reasonably quick, leaning towards them atm.

I've also seen packages offering 256, 512, 1 and 2 gb connections. I don't really download large files that often, I'm edging towards either a 256 or 512 connection. Whichever one i go for it doesn't effect ping does it?

anyway, basically i was just curious if there's an isp out there thats head and shoulders above the rest or one that should be avoided at all cost (i'm guessing BT :p).

Any tips would be appreciated

thanks

I have 512/256 ADSL from BT and have no probs with it having upgraded from ISDN. Ping is fine - 25-30ish on BW UT1 servers and 50ish on UT 2k3 servers (equivilant to the UT1 F6 ping). Downloading files from BW UK subscribers FTP, for example, reach circa 58kb/sec although sometimes a higher D/L rate seems to be achieved with multiple DLs. I'm happy with it but I'd upgrade to BT 1024 service when it's available.

id advise you stay clear of bt/freeserver/aol etc, as they tend to cost more and be a bit slower.
try smaller isps such as zen/nildram/f2s and you will be happy

btw i have f2s

BT broadband is fine for me, consistent downloads of 55-60 KB/s and pinging 20 to jolt cs servers

i have a 512 bt line and have had no real problems since the initial installation but that was down to wrong information from the suport line.

yoni has a 1 meg ntl line obviously she can download files in half the time i can but when we are playing games my ping is quite often lower than hers but only but 1 or 2

I have Zen at my 'rent's house and Nildram in my own house... both are excellent ISP's, (almost) flawless service...
