I'm thinking of getting ADSL but obviously I need to share the connection across my network and I ain't about to set up a Windows box to do this seeing as I have a perfectly serviceable Linux gateway. So, has anyone else managed to do this? I'm told that the modem provided for home use has a USB connection and I'm not sure of the state of play with Linux and USB.

lol Flatus, not had enough trouble with ISDN eh? Looking for your next challenge already ? ;)

Anyway, I dont know about ADSL, (just happy enuff to have the ole ISDN workin) but I do know that Linux does recognise USB. At least Mandrake 8.0, which so far to me the most trouble free, professional distribution I have used (also used RH5.2, 6.0, COL2.3 & Suse 6.1), correctly identified my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB during installation, and also asked me if I had any other USB devices. I think USB support was introduced with the 2.4.x series of kernels.

Support is one thing, but how GOOD is the support?
I could say that NT4 has DirectX support and neglect to say it only supports up to DirectX 3.

Thanks chaps.
I've been doing a bit of digging and found Linux drivers for the modem and also a couple of forums where people are reporting success. I think I'll put me order in today.

Well, you've got to have something to keep the old braincells active, especially at my age!

I've heard that it runs quite well, especially as some of the modem manufacturers are starting to release their own drivers.
I'm going to move to DSL quite soon myself, but I'll be using an ethernet card to connect to the inevitable modemthingy.
Why? Dunno really :) I have both USB mouse and printer, but have gotten adapters for both. Just don't like USB somehow.

I shall be going the USB route simply because ethernet costs £100 more to install and twice the monthly charge! Can anyone explain that one to me?

it's BS isn't it. The only thing I can think of is that USB is getting pushed as it's the 'in' thing. The rampant USB pimping is getting done over here as well, but not with such a blatant price diff.
Perhaps it's because an ethernet card goes in your computer and that scares the tech coming to install it.
[not that said tech actually gets to touch my pc you know...I'll beat him to a bloody pulp is he tries :D]

wow that's a bit harsh!
I thought I was getting f00ked but you've bested me by about 150 pounds :(

I don't have a phone line you see, as I get TV, internet and phone service via cable so for me to go DSL I'd have to a)get a phone line b)have it converted to DSL [the most expensive replugging ever] and c)get an ISP that supports DSL and finally drop the cable internet/phone contract. Expected costs ~300quid

Can't you get a cable modem? I'd get one but...apparently all the fibre-optic cabling in Brighton is not capable of carrying the data - DOH! It was only installed about 10 years ago!

I'm on cable right now, but I don't trust chello anymore. I've got this wierd feeling they're going to crap out and I can't shake it :(

USB is also used as it makes networking harder.
