Girlfriend managed to elephant feet over my laptop, cracking the fucker. How much should I be looking at to charge her in order to get it repaired? Not under warranty anymore as it's a good 3-4 years old.

Can usually pick up a new screen for £40-60 on Ebay. They're easy enough to change.

And if I wanted to pay someone to do it?

If a mate asked me, I'd do it for free.
If someone else asked me, cost of screen plus £20 or so. Most of the time spent doing it is all those fucking tiny screws.

Screen cost depends on exact model of Aspire.

All those fucking tiny screws *shudder*. I had to take my VAIO entirely to bits in order to replace the heatsink and fan assembly for the CPU. It was a case of "well this bit needs to come off but in order to do that I need to take this bit off" about 5 times over. I had about 40 screws (of 4 or 5 different sizes) laid out on a bit of paper at one point.

Luckily I found a (dis)assembly guide which took me through it step by step otherwise I'd of been up the creek. It makes you appreciate the work they put in to squeeze it all into such a tight space though.

Just the screen should be no great shakes though Everz, what model is it exactly?

Acer Aspire 5742G.

I'm not a tech wiz or anything.. don't wish to destroy it.

Replacing a screen is easy. When looking at a replacement, try to find one of at LEAST grade B. Grade A is better. As for replacing the fucker. Well that's simple.

Pull the rubber plugs away from the screws on the bezel (Frame around the screen)

Take them out and carefully pull the bezel off. Work a butter knife or something under it but be careful not to break any tabs.

Undo the screws holding the screen/rails onto the plastic back and remove.

Undo the screws holding the screen onto the rails.

Carefully remove the screen, remembering to unplug the cables from the inverter (Strip of board that should be just below the screen)

Reverse procedure to fit the new screen.

Simples.

When my son dropped his Acer laptop on the school bus I had the screen replaced for 80 GBP by a registered repair center. Sounds like a lot less hassle than what you have done to save a few bob.

Where's the sense of manly accomplishment in that?!

Not a clue, I only can read what the sticker on the bottom says.

Consider it time to buy a new one - laptops dont last forever like desktops in my experience.

No moneys, that and it's never pushed to do more then run Football Manager, and watch porn.
