Do I have to melee with it to get the debuff proc to go off?

I wondered 2 things about these staffs,
1. As you ask, do you have to hit them in melee? and
2. Why are they so crap?

What makes them crap Svartalf? They have similar stats to the weapons, they have the focuses needed AND you get to choose when and where you want to debuff.

can't see y they are so bad tbh

good stats, all focuses ect, and u get to debuff/nuke whenever u want for yr dmg type (depending ofc if u chose staff to debuff your dmg type). In fg v fg prolly not AS useful (but nonetheless think it will help) but in other kinds of fights being able to debuff yr dmg type and then doing more dmg per dd/pbae would be pretty deadly imo

But guess there must be some major reason or some major flaw to my thinking because not many ppl use them for some reason
