With this latest patch, Mythic gives us a WONDERFUL new tool called /qbind.
As of that patch, all your /qbars are obsolete. Here is why:
/qbind lets you assign /qbar slots to your keyboard. This is an extremely powerful tool. You can now put things like Purge, AP, and Stealth on your keyboard!
Here is how to setup /qbind and what my /qbars look like after I did it:
First and Foremost: you MUST study your keyboard layout and how you would like to change your keys around. If you put together a keyboard setup piecemeal, you will HATE /qbind.
Before you can use /qbind, you will have to rearrange your existing keyboard configuration and make sure the keys you wish to use are not assigned to other actions.
(NOTE: If you are already in game, type /quit and skip to number 5.)
1. At your log-in screen, use the drop-down menu and seleect "No thank you" as your Quick Entry selection.
2. Click the "OK" button".
3. Click "Accept" as required on TOA and EUALA agreements.
4. Select the server you wish to play and click on the "Play" button.
5. You are now at your character selection screen. Click on "Options".
6. Click on "Configure Keyboard" (at the top right).
7. Click on the action you wish to change. It will turn blue when selected.
8. Press whatever key you wish to use for that action. If you wish to clear the action completely, click on "Clear Key" towards the bottom left. (You will not see the "Clear Key" option unless you have already selected a key to change.)
9. If you select a key already in use by another action, the previous action will turn red, alerting you to the fact another action was afected by your change.
10. After you have cleared the keys you wish to use for /qbind and rearranged your actions as you wish, click on "EXIT".
11. Click on "ACCEPT" (at the very bottom right).
12. You are now back at the Character selection screen. Select the character you wish to play and enter the game. You must be in DAOC to use the /qbind command and assign qbar slots.
Once in game, you must now re-arrange your /qbars. when you have them setup the way you wish, you are ready to use /qbind.
The command line for /qbind is:
/qbind Qbar# Slot#
Thus to assign the action on /qbar 10 in slot 5 to a keyboard key, you would type:
/qbind 10 5
When you type this and hit enter, you will get a prompt telling you to pres which ever key you want that action bound to. If you wish to make your selection linked to "k", press "k" and you are done! Now, whenever you press "k", you will perform whatever is in Qbar 10, slot 5.
Here is the BEST thing about /qbind: you press "k" to activate Qbar 10, slot 5, you REMAIN ON YOUR CURRENT QBAR!!
This makes /qbind a remarkably powerful tool. A couple potential uses just to demonstrate why you should set up /qbinds today:
1) You normally load Lifebane and Envenerate on your primary weapons, but see a solo Troll BD running down the road towards you. He is already slightly hurt and if you had Disease loaded, you would love to take a shot at him. You quickly change q-bars and switch to Disease on your right hand weapon. By the time you change back, the BD is past you. WRONG!!! Not any more! Now, when you see the BD coming, you simply press one key and Disease is loaded onto your right hand weapon. No time is lost changing qbars and manually loading the poison. One key stroke and you are ready to fight!
2) You are in a large fight. You quickly use up your poison loads while helping kill two opponents, but the fight is still intense and time is of the essence. With 2 keystrokes, you reload poisons on the weapons you are currently using while you move towards your next victim.
3) Your sortie outside the Keep to drive back siege forces is failing to achieve its goal. As scouts warn of even more incoming enemies, the order is given to retreat back inisde the Keep. As you head towards the Gatekeeper, enemy forces begin to overwhelm you. You quickly try to switch qbars to the one with your Enter/Exit macro but hit the wrong one and die trying to get back inside the safety of the Keep. WRONG!!! Not anymore! You simply run to the Gatekeeper and hit the key you have your Enter/exit macro /qbound to! Viola! - you are safely inside.
As you can see, using /qbind takes some advance preparation and thought. However, the long-term benefits of using this feature greatly outweigh the potential short-term frustrations of coming up with a good keyboard template for your actions.
