A Upset Computer

now this is pizzing me off, i have:-

athlon 700 CPU (unclocked)
GA 7ix Borad
256MB SDRAM
GeForce Annihator Pro
20 GIG HDD
USR V.Everything V.90
WIN98

new every time i go on Q2, one of these happerns

A) I use DirectX and after a min the sistem freezes or crashes
B) I use open GL (the bog standard one) it doesent load up saying bad model or when it does load up and after say 20 mins eather the System freezes or the Q2 crashes

as well on the heat monitor it says the CPU is 50C and the heat inside the case is 40 C, is this normal operating Temp???

Now this is doin my head in, any ideas???

The Athlon runs very, very hot as standard so you should really budget for cooling (and a suitably sized case/enclosure) for it.

I can't vouch for the exact specs. of the mobo you have (or indeed the Athlon itself, since I dont have one) - but 40 degs. mobo temp and 50 degs. CPU temp is pretty high (my PC Health monitor warning threshold is 60 degs for both components).

To give you some kind of perspective, my PC has been on for about 1 hour and current operating temp. of the mobo is 23 degs...

Durzel - very very hot as u say athlons run aint true... with shit cooling they run warm yes but good cooling sees em in the 30 degree range... I use overclocked athlons daily at work and not one has been dead hot... we overclock 500's to 800 too

50 is indeed high tho for a CPU... my celly at 605 is at 25 atm but i have a massive cooler and good case cooling... mobo is also at 25. Most 750+ athlons run at about 40 deg c under heavy load...

Id say upgrade yer cooling m8y and u will be sorted.

ive put a heavy indistrial BB fan on the front and im gonna fit 1 for tha back, i think i might get a better cooler, humm and the shop said it would be alright

U need to go to www.nvidia.com and get the latest athlon compatible detonator drivers. Then, goto www.tweak3d.net for a guide to uninstall yer present drivers as they are messy to get rid of... any legacies cause probs... try new drivers, and if still problematc, upgrade yer cpu cooler and see wot the score is then.

Basically, some athlon sys's had probs with geforces at 2x agp as it made too much electrical noise in the agp bus causing instability... the latest drivers disable 2x but performance is virually the same from my testing... this however lowers the electrical noise and helps regain stability.
