If a tree fell down in the middle of a forest and no one heard it, then would it make a sound?

define sound..... the question is generally "Does it make a noise?"
which generally is answered no because for a sound to be a noise it has to be heard! :p

How do you know?

Sound = Vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing.

It only mentions "capable of being detected" not actually being detected. The same is true of the word "noise" - either way...

ggthx.

:)
