Recently since i updated from standard to the SI client i've started to encounter loads of lag, example, as i run out from ligen at the end of the alley i always lag solid 5-10 seconds before it lets go, and always in the frontier i get small lagspikes, like every 4'th second, which if i'm stuck to someone after a minute or 2 i've lost /stick becoz i've lagged to far behind, this usually renders me ooe by the time we reach ailinne just in order to keep up with the rest of the group.

Anyone have any ideas of how to increase the performance?
Whats the best OS to run daoc with on a p4@1.5ghz &256mb ram?

Currently runnin w2k, tho thinking of maybe switching to w98 to free up some more RAM memory, any ideas or alternatives? this lag is slowly driving me nuts =(

You dont list your video card or internet connection / ISP, that would be usefull. What spec you do list would be improved with another 256MB of memory. Stay with Win2k (or upgrade to XP), though a fresh install often helps. Dont use win98.

Your problem is probably to do with your internet connection as you are describing lag faults not just bad fps when you go OOS.

lag = bad latency to server

most common cause would be bad connection to server.

If your on a 28.8k modem in Afganistan you could play the game on a beast of a machine but still lag like a mofo.

If you are in a reasonable internetty country like UK France German scandinavia etc and are using DSL and still getting lag then you may be getting slow down from a poor graphixs card...

Rule out latency using www.pingplotter.com (good little tool that)

Rule out Graffix card by getting GEF4

I experienced the same problem with Classic DAoC except that in addition to the lag it had an intermittant disconnection thing going somewhere between every 1 to 20 minutes,

After trawling through various forums I found that DAoC is not supported on win2k, neither was my graphics card - which at the time was a Radeon.

I bought a GeForce 4600, and upgraded to winXP - problem solved.

May have expressed myself a little vague, to give some more info about my system:

p4@1.5ghz
256mb RAM
GForce4 Ti4600
10mbit internet connection
Win2k professional

The lag i'm experiancing feels more like hardwarelag than internetlatency, both the framerate/latency-meters gets a red square for a few seconds, 5-10s roughly when running out from ligen, and then constantly small lagspikes every 4-5'th second as i described above, it's most noticable in the frontier zones, in PvE there's little to no problem, but once i'm doing an emain run it feels like im sitting on a completly diferent computer, and if we happen to run into albs/mids the framerate drops alot.

I recently reinstalled win2k, thinking it might have been somehting i installed thats lying inthe background taking up resources, but after the reinstall it's the same thing really.
The strange thing is that i seldom experianced this kind of lag when i was running the daoc-classic client, sure i got lag when there was millions of albs/mids about, but i would for example never lag solid when running out of ligen, i could stick to someone without getting lagspikes etc.

So, I'm getting rather desperate, it shouldn't be like this really, my first thought was that i didn't have enough RAM, and since i can't buy some more in a week or 2 i thought maybe if i reinstalled win98 on my system. since Win2k takes around 70-100 mb of RAM just to run, it might cause the computer to swap alot of data back and forth from the HDD if daoc suddenly required loads of ram to load models and game material that it couldn't store in RAM memory, and that would explain the hardware lag. if that is the case installing win98 might be a temporary solution since win98 takes alot less RAM memory to run, altho the memory-management isn't the greatest in w98 so i would supposedly have to reboot every so often to clear the memory.

Just curoious, as i do not feel like installing win98 if it's not helping, if anyone else have been having similar problems, or if anyone is running with a similar setup like me and is doing fine, anyone have any ideas of settings i could enable/disable in order to improve things?

Suggestions and ideas would be most welcome.

/Regards

the only thing i can see that gives you that lag prob is the ram... as someone said here before get another 256 and and you will be running great (you'll have my spec then just that i have xp and i lag very rarely) the bigger the graphics and stuff the more memory the game will demand if he doesn't find that in your ram he'll go to your HD and write there since your HD works slower then your ram you'll have a delay on your loading time and hence the lag

Ill say it again....

DO NOT INSTALL WIN98, that wont help you.

And as censi, and I previously said, your problem is your internet connection. Any problems with anything other than the 'fps' performance metre are due to your communications.

I would guess..

a). Your ISP is rubbish.
or
b). Your have a hardware fault in your network card.
or.
c). Theres a problem between your network card and whatever line you use.

either way all these problems should show up using the 'classic 'client as well.
