Is it the hardware or software that is resposible for zonecrashes when there is a large density of players? I am curious to know if actually you are running shit hot servers and its just mythics coding letting the team down or whether your scamming us and running it on some 2nd rate platform and the game itself can indeed cope with massive zergs?

back in the time of Corpse Summoners and buggy LoS necros we had a 12 hour massive battle fighting across the entirety of the mid frontier ending up in front of their relic keep.

There was no crash.

Our servers are fairly high-specced boxes and they are all running the same configuration now (with the exception of Camlann). I don't have specifics but I believe our servers are at least comparable with the US servers and are all above the technical specs Mythic recommend.
I'll see if I can get some more details on exactly what we are running and how they compare with US servers but I can't promise anything as our tech department may tell me it's commercially confidential.

Thanks for the reply Requiel, im not after details just a simple is it software or hardware based problems that cause zergs to topple excalibur and presumably other servers?

What I would like to know is :
are the ToA zones on their own servers or distribute accross the already used servers ?

And if so can you redistribute it so you get ToA zones of the servers that handle the frontier zones, as those servers should not do anything but handle that IMO.

Preferbly I would hope that ToA zones are running on their own servers and not influencing the already existing servers.

To be honest, I don't think I could answer that. It might be something that only Mythic can answer. I'm certainly not going to go on record as saying Mythics coding sucks.
DAoC is a very advanced and very ambitious game. The amount of information flowing around the server and between server and client is stupendous. Our systems are high-end servers, they are dual Xeon boxes with robust network gear and fast hard-drives. I really wouldn't like to say whether they are inadequate or whether the code is inefficient. I suspect that the answer might be that the game is ahead of the current technology curve but I'm not a server tech and I'm not up to date with the current state of the art.

Ok Ill say it for you on your behalf. Mythics coding sucks.

On older code and older hardware huge battles were possible. On improved hardware they are no longer possible. Therefore the code has worsened significantly. QED.

Its a software problem - plain and simple. Happens in some patches more than others. The patch you mention (original SI launch) was particularly good at handling huge zergs in 1 zone. The patches after that had serious problems, really no patch since then has been anything like as zerg-friendly.

Mythic documented in detail what their server config was back at release, and the updated server specs have been are available to anyone who cares too.

So if you claim its commercially confidential youll get laughed at really ;)
