A sign of things to come?

Anyone who ever played DAoC on the european servers probably doesn't have much faith in GOA already. Most of us will remember the server crashes, the corrupted characters, the monsters spawning in emain, and all the other problems and the lies that came with them.

Since retiring from daoc years ago i began to forget and forgive and think that surely this can't be the same again with WAR, and despite some vocal doomsayers saying they'll never trust GOA again, and that the US servers are the way to go, it looks like majority kept the faith and awaited beta.

We can all see now that they've failed pretty miserably at the first hurdle. Despte GOA and Mythic stating there wont be a difference between the services we have already felt a difference. And remembering the lies we've been told before i'm seriously considering just playing the US come release.

Am i wrong to feel like this? Or should we all be worried that this is to be expected from GOA in the future?

I dont think anyone will deny that goa have messed up the open beta badly, and have lost alot of faith with a considerable part of the player base. I too played in DaoC, from open beta and up into toa. My reason for leaving DaoC though wasn't much at all to do with goa, more that I hated toa with a passion.

Its true goa didnt provide a great service back then, I remember frequent server crashes and a fair amount of emergency maintenance. I think moving much of their staff to Dubin was a positive move, and despite their poor performance in OB (yep Im one of the players still unable to accesss) they have still shown some improvement since DaoC.

Tbh I don't think we will ever quite get the service that Mythic will provide, firstly I believe the Americans have a stronger work ethic generally than we have in most of western europe, and they are more customer focused. But just as importantly there are other issues that will always make goa's job more difficult, server location in France, not good imo. Also having to run servers in several diffrent languages, must persent some additional difficulties.

I'm holding back though from from rushing out to order the US version depsite the obvious advantages in service for several reasons.

1. You will experience more lag issues and higher ping
2. Time diffrence, though I dont dbout servers will be resonably populated during euro play times, most of the larger scale conflicts are more likely to happen during NA 'prime time'. There is nothing worse then either having to log off for bed as a battle hots up, or staying up all night to see it out and feeling like crap at work all day. Not to mention taking crap from your gf for not coming to bed!
3. Most importantly to me, having played mmo's based in both europe and NA, I think the euro comminity tends to be more friendly. A level of 'trash talk' goes on in any mmo. The more pvp focused or competitive they are the higher the level of trash talk and general abuse. This kind of behaviour for me is a big issue on alot of NA based servers where there is a high degree of pvp within an mmo.

Even if I only manage to get in for the closing stages of this beta, Im going to give goa a month to show what they can do before heading stateside..

yup, another voice in the chorus, but a valid question.
Yes, go for the US beta, there are plenty of people already going

Not sure if there's an unoffical GOA exile server yet, but that's probably where it'll be listed

Regardless of preordering EU or US edition, you'll have a chance to see (roughly) response times, and very importantly community spirit.

Thinking about it, if the US community is crap or everyone playing Order is a closet emo, I'll leave the game for a couple of months to give GOA a chance to catch up and enjoy the flood of new students to my area. If nothing else it's funny watching them order a drink for the first time, the best one yet was:
numpty "a pint of beer please"
wise and patient barman "which one?"
"there's more than one?"
"yes, bitter or lager?"
"erm lager"
"right, which one?"
"which is the cheapest?"
"slopstray"
"pint of that then"

/cue regulars choking on their pints as the barman does indeed pour a pint of slopstray for the special bus candidate

Well i played DAoC on the US servers for a few months and i had no ping or latency problems, i'd probably go as far to say i had less problems than with opentransit.

Personally i have no problems with the time differnece since i'm usually up late if playing games.

The only thing i'll miss is the people i already know from EU, but you usually find a lot of them crossing over anyway, aswell as the fact that i made a few US friends in my time there :)

This thread is more of a discussion than the general whining in the others, thanks for your lovely contribution though.
