One of my auctions ended tonight for just over £100, the winner looks fine with 100% feedback.

However, something happened on paypal that i'd never seen before. I had to login to paypal to "accept" a payment made by a debit/credit card and by doing so upgrade my account to a "premium user"; "fine" i thought and happily accepted the payment and automatically withdrew to the funds to my bank account.

Then I was looking on ebay for a used hard disk when I spotted on a seller's item:

FAO Paypal user: Due to fraudulent members using unauthorised credit cards, if you have a Paypal unconfirmed address, your payment may take 5 working days or more to clear; it is recommended that if you have account is not verified/confirmed with Paypal, you should pay by either Postal Orders, bank deposit, bank transfer or cheque. Apologies to genuine e-Buyers – make eBay safe to sell.

This gave me cause for concern as it was the first time i'd seen this on paypal and my buyer has an unconfirmed address - should I wait until I DEFINITELY have the funds in my bank account before sending the goods? What if a buyer *has* used a fraudulent card? Do I get my money taken off me AND lose my goods? Is this common?

How should I proceed with this one? Any advice much appreciated as i've only sold one thing before, so i'm a n00b basically.

Yes, always wait until the payment is cleared before you send anything.

Check if you are covered by seller protection for that transaction in paypal (check the transaction details from paypal), if not then you are not covered against fraud.

I suffer from the problem of an unverified address, comes from living at Uni halls where the phone line is a premium number and they dont accept mobile numbers.

Dont think theres anything wrong with it, just do as ch3tan said and wait for it to clear.

This was covered on watchdog a few weeks back - they basically said if you're using paypal, wait for the money to clear into YOUR bank account first before dispatching the item.

They were also adamant that paypal were naughty in most cases, when quite clearly its sometimes fraudulent behavior or certainly not a valid CC being used.

Can PayPal chargeback the money from YOUR bank account? Or once you've withdrawn it, it's fine?

the ammount of times idiots like you complain about something to do with ebay/paypal is insane. Wahh bid on an auction without thinking wahh wahh wahh and in aid of saving a few bucks on dodgy merchandise. After you've paid for all the fraud cover and shit and wasted time faffing around and worrying you'll proly not have saved anything anyway.

Fine, use scambay whatever man its ur money, just dont fucking whine like hundreds of your like-minded simpletons when you get scammed trying to save £1 on an atomic kitten cd.

Wow, dont cry about it. You're the one who resorts to abuse when I merely suggest not using the website in question.

Grow up.

I believe it could still be charged back up to 3 months later - I seem to remember a story last christmastime of people using forged african CC's to buy stuff - the sellers waited till money cleared and sent the goods - they then got chargebacks some weeks later and ended up with nothing...

Not saying that this will happen in your case - just something to be aware of.

If you'd bothered to read the thread properly, you'd see he was selling, not buying, so your rant didn't actually make any sense.
