A question regarding RAM

I have been looking at the prices of DDR RAM and there can be a huge difference. Just looking at bog standard RAM compared to say Kingston or Geil the difference can be £20-£30 a stick for the same module e.g. 512 DDR PC 3200.

What benefits are there for using the more expensive RAM compared to the unbranded ?

Have you checked
Cruicial
? Their online sales price is very good and quality is better than unbranded.

I would have thought so. What do you get exactley for the higher price. Is there anything tangible ? Like if you compare a P4 2.0 to a P4 2.6 there is an obvious difference. With the memory I am struggling a bit

The difference is usually the CAS latency. The memory that costs more has faster timings, so does run a bit faster, and is more suitable for overclocking.

I'm not sure if its worth it or not, given how big the price difference is in some cases.

The difference between generic RAM and Stuff like Kingston or Crucial is the quality of components and the extent to which manuafacturers test their Brand.

The benefit is that Kingston is backed by a lifetime guarantee whereas gerneric or oem memory only has a limited 12 month warranty on it.

Also branded ram is less likely to fail or have errors Due to extensive testing.

I can say I am very very happy with my Geil value stuff. Overclocks fine, and I wasn't willing to pay a fortune for the cas 2 Kingston and Corsair stuff.
