Making Exp groups - Intro
Now we come to my preferred method of getting into exp groups. Its simple really, if you make the group, then you have to be in it. The truth it is hard work making a group, and it is hard work to keep a group going for X number of hours. However it is something that DOES get a lot better with practice. Primarily you need patience, but you also need to be able to say enough is enough. You must be fair, and treat everyone the way you would expect to be treated by someone making groups. Now lets get into the maelstrom of making groups.
There are two main types of exp groups. Firstly there are what I call normal/mez groups and then there are PBAOE groups.
Normal/Mez groups
Who you need
Lets talk a bit about normal mez groups. Your aim is to make a group of 8 people that can take on red, purple mobs relatively comfortably. It’s the ideal exp. Now firstly it’s a good idea to know what mobs are good to hunt around your level and you can ask people in your guild about this. (I might add this info in later into this guide). Because the FIRST thing someone will ask you when u PM them to join their group is what you plan on hunting.
At the start you will not really be fighting mobs that bring too many friends. So you can fight these mobs easily one at a time. Basically it means that the structure of your group can be quite loose with a great amount of variety. You should try to have AT LEAST 1 proper tank, ideally a shield hero, if not then a spear hero. You will also need at-least one healer. At lower levels all the healers are pretty ok for the job. However as you get higher level you will find that you need a druid to keep up with the healing that is needed, as it costs too much mana for bards and wardens to heal. You’re also gonna need a bard for endurance song and mana song or the downtime will be two great. Having two bards is an amazing for a group in term of downtime. After that, its good to have a caster in ur group as they do the most damage. Then fill the rest of the space with tanks and maybe another rogue or two. To be honest there should not be more than two rogues in one group or the group can get gimped. But this doesn’t matter that much in normal/mez groups. So now you know what you need, how do u get them?
How to get them
When you first start making groups you will find that people are reluctant to join your group and this is the stage where you must work the hardest and be the most patient. If you have a friend who is a tank/healer/bard around your level, then ask them if they want to set up an exp group. Otherwise ask in your guild if there are people who are around your level that are looking for a group. If this doesn’t work then its back to the /who method. If you’re level 25, then start at your level /who hero 25 will give a list of all hero’s at level 25. So PM them and start asking them if they wanna exp. They may ask you what you plan on hunting, and usually it’s a good idea if you know what you are doing. For example at level 21-23 aughuskies are great exp, at level 35-40 Weewere’s in CM pits are great exp etc. Once you get a tank or two you can start looking for a healer, but don’t mind getting maybe 3 or even 4 tanks while your doing this. Then when you ask a healer to join they will prolly ask you what you are hunting and who you have in your group. Now for a sad truth about healers. They tend to be spoilt and are used to getting into the best exp groups all the time, they are usually used to getting into groups that are higher level than them. So there will be a fair few of them who will be arrogant, who are selfish, and who are assholes, but not all of them are like that. You may not be able to get a healer your own level as they may want to join a higher level group. Anyways, telling a healer that you already have four tanks and that you can start killing X mob as soon as they join is a great incentive for healers to join. Alternatively you can tell them that you plan on hunting X mob, but you still need a bard or whatever. The more essential classes, like tanks, bards, druid, wardens that you get into the group the greater the chance you have of selling your group to others. Saying to a tank, ya I have a druid and two bards and two tanks, I just need another tank and we are set. Very few people will refuse an offer to join a group that seems to be so well rounded, weather there is a NS in it or not. And the truth is that you will have to sell yourself like this to ppl.
It does get easier though, because if you do this on a fairly regular basis, then when u PM ppl to join your group they will join with a lot less fuss, because they know you make good exp groups, and they have gotten good exp with you in the past. You may also become friends with the people who join your group and that helps also. In time you will get to know quite a few people who are around your level who play at the same time as you, and they will get to know you as the guy who makes exp groups, so when you PM them they will join knowing that you will get the group set up because you’ve done it before. So it does get easier.
Now as you get to higher level’s you will hunt agro mobs that BAF(bring a friend), in this case you need to PULL the mobs, I’m not going to get into the details, but basically you need a ranger or tank to pull. Ideally it should be a tank and champions make amazing pullers. You need to find a spot that is safe for your group i.e. not near the mob spawn, but that is close enough to the mob’s spawn to give you a decent pull rate. Up to level 40 you should TRY to hunt mobs that are red/purple and that come one at a time and are relatively easy to kill. So you can effectively chain pull them one after the other and this is great exp. But you really need a bard for a group like this. If the mobs BAF, then you will need a decent level bard who can MEZ them fairly consistently. A good example of such a group is where I hunted from level 35 to 40. Basically I hunted in a group with a Blademaster as a tank, with two other rangers in the group, but also with a druid and a bard in the corus mines pits.
