If everything goes as planned ill receive my copy of DAoC today (friday). And i'll prolly start playing it asap cause i'm already addicted if i see all the screenshots and all :p
I also went inactive from quake3 ctf (yes i'm a quaker :p) to play this game.

All I need really is some tips to start the game. All I know is I'm gonna play an armsman (highlander prolly), but don't know where to spec in etc.
Any tips to start? To not screw up?

TIA.

+10 to str/dex/con is the traditional tank starter

+15 to str and +10 to dex or con (or +5 each) if u feeling brave and really, really want an "edge"

Highlander is a bit low on dex to begin with and dex=accuracy so think about it...

K0nah pretty much covered the first, initial (and very critical stage, I've met who's boosted int, for example .)

My suggestion to you, would be to try and hook yourself up with a highlevel Armsman and talk a bit to him (command to use: /who armsman xx xx, where xx xx is the level range of persons which you wish to see.) I learned about the classes myself this way, to begin with, and so far, I can't remember a single person who couldn't be bothered not to reply back to me :)

I can't help ya much with the class which you wish to play, however you're more than welcome to message me in-game, should you have any questions in general (even if you're just wondering about where you should look for xp, etc.)

Goodluck with your Armsman :)

oh and yes, /who paladin 30 50 has helped me several times in my short carrier. Arthwyr was one of the most helpful of them all by introducing me to the beautiful secrets of paladins :)

Aswell as Tilde being very helpful on the boards, wherever you turn you'll get brilliant help

If starting a highlander, get that Quickness up too, you'll swing faster the more quickness you have. I regretted leaving it at 50 in beta with my 2-hander armsman. I'd go +5 str/con, +10 dex/qui with a highlander armsman, if I made one now.

"IF" you start one.. My advice would be, pick a more interesting class... Sure smashing, slashing and stabbing your enemies is fun. But it all comes to RvR. Armsman can't do anything in RvR when they go solo (trust me I know)

But if you still want to be one:
Slash/Crush/Thrust raises the minimum damage of the Polearm/2H weapons (and supplying you with the 1H attack styles).
Polearm/2H raises the maximum damage (and supplying you with the groovy styled attacks for Polearms/2H).
Parry is important for a Polearm/2H (while I believe 2H parry is still bugged)
Shield gives nice styles and increases the chance to block attacks (not to forget the Engage (90% blockrate) and the Guard (blocking attacks for a team mate) abilities).
X-Bow I wouldn't put any points in. Mainly there for pulling enemy mobs or by shooting greys who run away ;)

I hope this may helped you a bit. I'm an armsman myself and do have fun in PvE but RvR is hard without team.

Applies to everyone bar snipers and assassins

(till 1.50 when snipers become archers instead and assassins lose their grey-splatting escape clause)

hmm, what exactly is parry ?

The ability to use your weapon to block anothers attack.

Doesnt seem to work too good in Realm vs Realm...

Its great against monsters when you get it high though :)

Parry (taken from daoc.catacombs.com)

This ability grants you a base chance of 5% to deflect blows with your weapon, modified by the level difference between you and your attacker. Furthermore, each point you put into parry adds .5% chance to deflect blows.

Wielding a two handed weapon effectively doubles your chance to parry.

advice : dont start a highlander they look gay with their damn skirts :p start a briton :)

its difficult to screw an armsman up (50 parry and 50 xbow would probably be the worse - but then you'll probably hit for 400 dmg with your xbow and parry lots with it too :))

keep your weapon spec (slash/thrust/crush whichever you choose) at least 2/3 of your lvl, which means at lvl 30 you should have at least 20 in the weapon spec

if you want 2h weapons go for polearms - they easily outdmg 2h weapons (axes, swords) and keep this spec high ... if you choose to go S&S then keep shield spec high (42 is desired at lvl 50 for the shield style, but that's a long time away for you ;))

throw the rest of the points into parry and xbow - however u like it :)

my advice is make a full rejuve cleric . people will love you. you will lvl fast andalways get a group .

the reason i recomend a full juve cleric is because most people who r new to the game tend to gimp there 1st char and end up dumping itfor another type or re-roll to make a better char .
also with a full juve cleric cos lvling will be so easy u will learn a lot more about the game faster . imo id learn about the game and what chars are capable of what before you make a serious main char for rvr ,and what ever you do . dont rush to gewt to lvl 50 . if you read boards you will see that high % of the people leaving are the ones who have been there done and bought the t-shirt "got to lvl 50 . taken relics.loads of rps" they got nothing else to achieve in the game hence become bored and leave . ive been playing since a week after retail and im still enjoying it thouraly . even though i get killed a lot on rv i still find this game enjoyable and im sure ill be playing it for a long time to come .having fun is themost important part of this game and making friends,

If u want an easy job, go a basic tank, Armsman or paladin. They both have good points and bad. They both can use sword/sheild, 2h, plate armour and take hits. Armsman can pull (xbow) use polearms (max damage) where paladins have chants and rez at lvl 30. Armsmen get the good armour fast, chain at 5, plate at 15. A paladin get chain at 10 and plate at 20, but both are good tanks. u will also find that a paladin will get agro where as an armsman has to hit for agro in grps.  Have fun!

with a 2h weapon or poleaxe u hit for max damage. Slow yes, but nice damage. a sword/shield is good with high dex. 2h and poleaxes are strength based weapons. with a sword/shield your defence would e greater (block with shield). i was sword/shield armsman untill i got my first 2h axe (Head Slicer - Salis giants drop) at lvl 17. From there i liked it, but still have a sword/sheild just incase i get mobed and need a faster weapon to kill pest quickly and block so i take less hits. if u go want to be sword/shield u would have shield high specced (42 or 43 for the "slam" style) and the base weapon maxed. with armsman u would have the choice of speccing parry and xbow on top. as a paladin u wud have a choice of parry and chants.

go for:

50polearm
42shield
35crush
rest in parry

this if u wanna have fun in RvR and still be able to tank well in PvE

just noticed no-one had replied to this thread so i thought i'd bump it again...
42 shield gives you a use-anytime style (some styles require a specific event, say 'opponent fumbles' or 'use from side') that inflicts decent dmg (especially since you'll be using a large shield) and gives a 9sec stun. Meaning your target can't move, fight, run or cast for 9secs. In RvR i think armsmen specced like this run around with shield + 1hander, then on finding a target, stun it, switch to polearm, and make with the damage.
That's if you aren't rooted/mesmerised/stunned yourself on the other side of the battlefield from any targets.
