Firstly, my net connect is acting up. Download speeds are fine, pings are great, but upload speeds are... shite.
An upload will begin at like 10k/sec (I have 256kb upstream) and just gradually descend to 0.00k/sec. I notified blueyonder, who said it must be spyware / some p2p running prog. No p2p progs running, adaware nuking all spyware, same prob evident.
creating a new win2k account and messing with a few services doesn't remedy this either :|

running systray/background processes : Winamp, Daemon-tools, refreshlock, norton antivirus, msnmsg. I doubt one of those is stealing bw, though :|

Secondly, and this has been bugging me for ages and chasing me through formats and stuff, shutdown/reboot/log off take ages on all of my settled win2k/xp installs to date. New installs have always been fine, shutting down promptly. No Nvidia driver helper service running, in fact my services are quite well tuned, its just after the initial wave of software installation and configuration, smth slows down the shutdown process.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance etc.

I don't suppose you know what specifically gets installed in this "initial wave"?

For the first one, I had the same problem with ZenADSL last year, although I think it was actually worse. My uploads would start at full speed (~30k/s at the time) and then gradually decrease to 0.00k/s. Alternatively, I would just be entirely disconnected, as punishment for uploading. Anyway, this was fixed either by being a problem at Zen's end, or by me tinkering with the QoS packet scheduling lark (I was using XP at the time. Thinking back, I should have tried it in 2k - I had a dual boot - but it didn't occur to me). I say "either", because the problem was fixed on the day that I spoke to Zen and when I fiddled with the QoS thing, so I just accepted that it was fixed and thought no more about it. It might be completely different for DSL and cable, but the guy on the other end of the phone said he'd "tinker" with something (I love these techy geek terms!) and consequently, it worked again.

The only one of the apps you listed that could cause the problem would be msn (it being the only one that actually uses bandwidth in the first place), unless you've been hax0red and someone is running a winamp shoutcast server off your connection or something. :>

The second problem, I can recommend nothing other than reinstalling 2k and eliminating programs as you install them and they don't fuck up the shutdown process. Just make a note of what you insta... Oooh, I just had a better idea. Install a completely clean 2k install, with drivers if you know that they don't slow down the shutdown. Then make an image using Drive Image or Norton Ghost (Drive Image is like, so much better - it can even convert Ghost images to it's native format). Then start installing stuff and reboot after each program to see if it slows it down (painstaking I know but I can't think of any other way of narrowing it down, unless the problem occurs when logging off as well). When you find whatever it is that's causing the problems, put the image back on the drive and install everything apart from that to check that it worked ok. And then find an alternative to whatever it is that's causing you jip. :>

Mmkay, I think that is all for now.

cage, BY have some gay "selfhelp" program you can download now which should check out both the CM settings & Doze's built in configurations, have a scout on the help site for it because if it flags anything you can beat the BY tech support around the head with it very easily as (from what a m8 has told me) they're under orders to treat the programs results as "gospel"

hmm, STILL got problems after an hour of messing around with anything pretty much network related.

DU Meter says i'm using none of my upstream bandwidth, yet its still shit.

:|

useless blueyonder twats.

Shout at them then, it's a problem at their end. :)
