This is breaking news apparently. I don't know much about earthquakes but I'm guessing 8.2 is pretty fucking bad.

That country just can't get a break. :(

WARNING... THIS EARTHQUAKE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A WIDELY
DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI IN THE OCEAN OR SEAS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE.
AUTHORITIES IN THOSE REGIONS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY
AND TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION. THIS ACTION SHOULD INCLUDE EVACUATION
OF COASTS WITHIN A THOUSAND KILOMETERS OF THE EPICENTER AND CLOSE
MONITORING TO DETERMINE THE NEED FOR EVACUATION FURTHER AWAY.

THIS CENTER DOES NOT HAVE SEA LEVEL GAUGES OUTSIDE THE PACIFIC
SO WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DETECT OR MEASURE A TSUNAMI IF ONE WAS
GENERATED. AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE DANGER HAS PASSED IF NO
TSUNAMI WAVES ARE OBSERVED IN THE REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER
WITHIN THREE HOURS OF THE EARTHQUAKE.

Holy. Fuck.

Really Really freaky timings on this -

First Big Earthquake happened the day after Christmas Day
Next Big one happens day after Easter Sunday.

Ok is just coincidence not trying to suggest anything but expect the conspiricy theorists / religious nutters to be all over this one.

I thought that too, but I'm sure its just a very big coincedence. Unless some higher being caused it.

They have been waiting for this apparently. A 7-8 level quake was predicted a month or so ago.

They're not faring too well now, indonesia seems to be a complete disaster spot lately, first the tsunami now this earthquake which is a major one, I think the measurement is like 1 -> 10, 1 being a minor tremor or something and 10 being a massively destructive disaster.

I fear for their future. :(

Humans tend to just ignore and rebuild on the area of the previous disaster. How many times does a tragic disaster to happen before humans realise it's not the best place to be living?

I know it's not as simple as that, but as Sharma says, I fear for their future both in terms of potential disasters and what the fook to do to prevent them suffering such tragedy.

the ricter scale goes from 1-9 i think and it is not a linear scale so an 8.2 is NOT simply 8.2 times as bad as a 1, its more like 60-70 times as bad since its a logarithmic scale.

Hi guys

God willing it won't be as bad as last time

As for the richter scale, Chilly is right, the scale isn't 1:1. Apparently there is around a 30x increase in terms of energy released between each interval. So, for example, a earthquake magnitude 4 is 900 times more powerful than an earthquake magnitude 2. Wikipedia has an article explaining the scale and the relative energy ratings (a magnitude 8 event is equivalent to 1000 megatons of TNT).

Kind Regards

8.7 wll probably make this the most powerful quake of the year anywhere in the world (touch wood) but it is an expected aftershock of the gigantic 9.3 quake on boxing day and was expected

In fact 8.7 puts it in the top ten for the past 100 years.

Luckily this seems to not of caused a tsunami but the damage done on land is very serious with hundreds more dead.

Apparently scientists are a very surprised there wasn't a tsunami. read this for more info.

They are predicting another one about the same size as the one yesterday.
