61.x fps limit in Q3

I have a geforce2 MX based card that I just recently installed and I am hitting 240fps in Q2 at 640x400 and it drops to about 124fps at 1024x768. However in Quake3 my fps is about 61.5 at 640x480 and stays about the same all the way to 1024x768. Vsync is turned off in OpenGL and D3D modes, yet that shouldn't matter because my monitor's refresh is 85hz. At any rate the cards settings are identical when I play either Q2 or Q3, and yet the disparity exists.

Is quake3 limiting my fps? Why do the Q3 gods torment me soooooo... why... why... why?

Theres a console var to limit FPS too. I think its 'com_maxfps' or some such name. Make sure thats zero to ensure maximimum possible FPS.

Normally if you look at hardware sites, as a general indication, if your fps remain the same as resolution increases, you are cpu limited rather than video card limited. Tell us what cpu you are running on? It is quite possible that one that might have plenty of horsepower for Q2 might struggle with Q3. Q3 is very processor intensive.

Alternatively it might be the com_maxfps setting. I presume FT is being sarcastic or has made a booboo, cos setting it to 0 will ensure that your framerate is non-existent :) Type /com_maxfps at the console and see what number it returns. If it is 61 then try increasing it to 80 or so for starters.

But first tell us what proccy you have

While its usually very likely 'FT has made a booboo' :) com_maxfps 0 seems to work fine on my system? I recently updated my CPU was was getting very depressed with 'only' 60fps out of a 1Ghz PIII/GeForce DDR combo. Set com_maxfps=0 and voom, stare at a wall and its 230fps odd :)

I'll check the "/com_maxfps" when I get back to my system, but it is a PIII 800Mhz e/w 192MB. I don't believe that should be creating the problem.

Thanks for your input guys, I probably won't have too much of an opportunity to check or post the results, I am going to be away from the computer for a week. I'll post tonight or when I get back. Thanks again.

theres definitly something wrong, im using a P3 733, with 256 pc 100 & a gf2 mx, and im getting in timedemo about 130 fps and thats with a fair amount of gfx detail on, and in game its always above 100 normaly, what drivers are u using ?

I checked the "/com_maxfps" and it was preset to 80fps. I changed the value to zero and still received the same performance about 61 to 62 fps. I set the value to 200 (why not) but still no difference.

As for my driver I have detonator 3, version 4.12.01 release 6.50 from Nvidia.

I have the following settings under the OpenGL Settings tab:
Performance and Compatibility Options:
X Enable buffer region ext.
X Allow the dual planes...
_ Use fast linear-mipmap-linear...
X Enable anisotropic...
X Enable alternate depth buffering technique
_ Disable support for enhanced CPU instruction sets

Use desktop color depth (16bpp)
Buffer flipping Auto-select
Vertical sync Always off
No antialiasing
Use up to 22 MB of system memory to textures in PCI mode.
