Jeez that is alot for a handheld, they must be really confident that it is the mutts nuts. That is the Japanese price, I can imagine we will pay £200.

This...
Nintendo's 3DS hardware will launch in Japan on February 26, 2011, with the portable hitting the US and Europe a month later in March.

The new system, which features a 3D display and does not require separate glasses, will retail in Japan for ¥25,000 ($298 / £188).

and then this...

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata has indicated that the company does not intend to sell the new 3DS portable at a price below that of its production cost, ensuring a profit on hardware from day one.

Unlike Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo has traditionally always sold hardware at a profit from launch, allowing even modestly successful consoles such as the Nintendo 64 and GameCube to turn a significant profit for the company.

Speaking to website VentureBeat, Iwata commented that, "We believe we will produce enough value worthy of the production cost. We do not think we have to sell the products below cost."

However, Iwata would not be drawn on the price of the console, indicating that no final decision has yet been made. He did admit though that, "What I can confirm is that, in terms of the production costs, it will cost more than the costs for the Nintendo DS today."

Iwata was not asked about the release date of the portable, although the company has previously stated that it will be released worldwide before March 2011. He did however indicate that all pending issues in terms of supply and manufacture of the 3DS's special LCD screens "have been fixed".

Also in the interview, Iwata revealed that the company had produced working 3D demos with both GameCube launch title Luigi's Mansion and the Game Boy Advance in 2001. Although the GameCube test had an "appealing" result Nintendo's earlier portable was not deemed powerful to produce a useful effect.

Iwata also indicated that that 3DS, which was not originally designed with 3D imagery in mind, was not a direct reaction to Apple's iPhone or iPod, despite plans for a degree of e-reader functionality.

Hmm

All of the impressions were really positive, I have no doubts over the tech.

Yeah it is getting some very positive previews, it does seem the tech holds up well.

I only worry about the games. I would have a DS by now but the only game that interested me was Dragon Quest 9, and even that didn't excite me much as I didn't enjoy DQ8.

Maybe with it being a bit of a powerful handheld, it'll attract more of the 'hardcore' developers with ideas for all gamers, not just casual crap? At that price, I don't think it'll just be marketed to casuals...

I'll pay anything to play Pilot Wings tbh lol.

I expect the £200 mark will be about right, any more then that and people won't buy it in favour of home consoles. I wasn't interested in the 3D gimmick but with the recent announcement of some really quality titles (granted updated Nintey games) I kind of want one. I would imagine it would be region free so I could buy from Japan in theory.

Why bother buying the thing anyway? 6 months down the line a new improved version will be out just like they always do it really amazes me how many times the DS has been redesigned and the price always goes up too.

Why buy a car, there's a new model out next year.
Why buy a graphics card, the new ones out in 6 months.

It's because Nintendo don't promise the earth and then deliver fuck all. They deliver something then they improve it, simple. If someone could explain how that works with say an xbox 360 or a PS3 then I'd entertain your point Aada.

Some people have that mentality where they can be perfectly happy with a product, but then something newer comes out and it's like, amigawd, my one is shit now! No, it is still the same great product you loved 2 days ago you fucking wanker.

You're right, it's completely absurd for people to feel a bit gutted when a new product that supersedes their own comes out not too long after having bought it.

Lay off the full sugar cokes ok?

My point was guys is they update the device almost ever year it just gets a little annoying that the price goes up with it too.

The DS Lite wasn't more expensive than the DS, so I don't actually understand how that is a problem. Same goes for PSP, xbox 360 and PS3 hardware revisions.
