33% increase in subscription price?

Just what do GOA feel they will do to justify this increase?

33% more effort into making the game better?
make the game 33% more interesting?
catch 33% more of the cheaters that abuse bugs daily?

or just take our money and do fuck all else like normal? 2 months after the vast majority of us paid out extra to buy shrouded isles.

gg GOA, you probably will lose a lot of people with all the new MMOGs coming out later this year and next.

Hello,

More than a year after its launch, Dark Age of Camelot is going through a new evaluation of its subscription prices, while remaining the cheapest 2nd generation MMORPG on the market (from 9.16 € per month). This change of tariffs will take effect at the 5th of May 2003 onwards, and will affect the subscriptions signed after this date.
The subscriptions still valid before the revaluation will not be affected until they are renewed, after the 5th of May 2003 onwards.

From this date the new subscription tariffs will be :

1 month subscription : 8£ or 12€
3 months subscription : 22£ or 32€ (less than 11 € per month)
6 months subscription : 41£ or 60€ (10€ per month)

On this occasion we have decided to create a new type of subscription, 12 months for 75£ or 110€ (9.16€ per month).

Sincerely yours,

The DAoC Europe Team.

copy of the email for those who haven't checked theirs at home yet :p

Either the inflation in France is rediculously high, or they're going to provide more and better services or they're just greedy bastards.

Pick one. :p

You can't. You won't. It's a drug, you're all addicted! mwhahahahaaa!

<coughs>

Supply people with an addictive substance cheaply for long enough, and they'll pay more eventually.

But yes, what exactly are they offering for the increase in subs?

Someone find an E&E and slap him/her/it into finding out.

1 month subscription rising from 10€ to 12€
2 month subscription rising from 27€ to 32€
2 month subscription rising from 50€ to 60€

according to my math that's only a 20% increase

but I can see the prices when paying with pounds are raised more, the reason for this is that before this price change it is actually subscribing and paying with pounds than it is with paying with euro

with the price change the rates will almost exactly equal.

tried both to danish kroner
41 £ * 10.8363 dkr/£ = 444.2883 dkr
60 € * 7.4261 dkr/€ = 445.566 dkr

as for the change at all, things get more expensive, people need raises, better server costs more money so on so on
I don't mind terribly much

Nah inflation has nothing to do with this matter ... i recon the CoE wants a new chopper or his own tube. Or maybe they are out of Champagne ?

But when you think about it 2J isnt that much after all. One less shot of vodka or a pint in other words :p

Well if they DO put it in the news, I sure would like to see a lenghty explanation of what they intend to do with the money.

And reasons like "events" I'm afraid are just not going to cut it.

Could it be that the 150 000 copies of SI sold have convinced them they can just do whatever they feel like with their client base ?

The reason for the larger increase in the UK is because GOA is in the Euro zone. the prices are fixed in Euro's then converted at that time into Sterling. The Euro is significantly stronger now than it was last year when the subcription was first done.

http://cchart.finance.lng.yahoo.com/z?s=EURGBP=X&z=m&t=1y

Actually with todays rate 12 Euro = 8.22 Pounds, so the British are better off than the Euro zone :D

Or maybe the player bse is being punished for pushing GOA in investing into a PvP server nobody's using ?

well, in comercial point of view and investment point of view the riase isnt that weird. They are investing in new servers, hired a team to translate the patches. Honest is jonest, we are not far behind from the Us patches. Like it or not, Goa is a commercial company that "bought" the game with the intension to make money. At the moment daoc is the #1 mmporg game and they have established a solid position, especially in france and germany. I asume Goa has done a market research amongst the biggest group of users (german and french) and made an estimate of the number of losses of subscriptions and the financial gain. Seems harsh but as long as the english comunity is the smallest on daoc goa will point their attention to the french and german members.

Its commonly known though that new product = high starting price that eventually goes Down <not Up> with new market entrants and increasing competition as newer games come out. Raising the price without solid excuse < which will most likely be investment in more manpower blablabla, a typical excuse. Heck they can even claim they improved the average response time of RightNextMonth > is plain weird from strategic point of view :p

Hell, for me it's even more motivation to give up a bad , bad habit.
Mind you, the government hikes up the price of cigarretes every year, but that doesn't stop some people from smoking....

if they are upping the prices at least fix the xml :bore:

Personally these price rises don't seem too excessive. Sure it may seem a high percentage increase but, IMHO, the 'old' price was a little low.

In any event GOA are running the game under licence from Mythic and are themselves a subsidiary of France Telecom -- thats a lot of people wanting their share of their cake ... a cake which has a limited amount of life in it and they all know it.

Mixing metaphors, apologies :)

This depends on the strategy a company wishes to folow. Game consoles need to be "cool". So they start with a high price, only a "lucky"few can afford it. Other ppl will see this and want to buy it. GoA obviously chose the penatrating strategy, where the first objective seems to be to create a stable position first, and Pharm cash later.

Altough im not entirly sure if the 20% increase is worth it, it is very logic that goa increases his price.

Just close the pvp server and stick a coop server in its place. that might justify the increase ;)
