Ok so last night I watched Donnie Darko and it confused the hell out of me. If you haven't seen it and dont want it ruined, then I suggest you dont read the rest of this.

Basically I managed to figure out that the bit with frank and the 28 day countdown was this alternate universe that shouldn't exist because he was meant to die, and didnt so stuff was wrong. Also that this universe was spiralling out of control and would end, and he had to die to stop it, which meant going back in time.

Thing is... The thing that killed him was the jet engine from the plane that was the means of him being able to go back in time... you cant say that he was meant to die so he had to go back in time and make sure he died because he only died as a result of going back in time, if that makes sense.

Then on top of that theres all the god crap, basically he's scared of dying because he doesnt believe in god and he is scared of being alone, right?

My theory- its either a slightly fantasic film about some messed up time travel and complicated paradoxical whatnot jobbies

Hes lying in bed asleep, and a jet engine comes thru his roof he wakes up in time to see it and for 0.0000005 seconds he has the most trippy, lucid dream ever cos hes a nutter anyway. Although there are some things in the film that point to theory a as opposed to b, like at the end sequence when its that song about crazy world or wotever and you see Frank and his mask and he rubs his left eye where donnie will/did/would have (ugh...) shot him. And his hoe who seemed to have some strange lingering memory of him subconciously.
