So, after having been unable to use my pc for 2-3 weeks, I've nearly got the new parts (motherboard/videocard/power supply) sorted, and voila... I then move on to kill my processor by dumping it into the motherboard along with the fan, severely bending a number of pins ;< I think they should make hardware retard-proof :(

The thing is, you need to stick the chip in there, lock it, and then stick the fan in there on top of the cpu. I, however, thought the chip was stuck to the fan, as it had been in the computer for like two years, and forgot about the cooling glue shit I used when I first installed it, so figured it melted to the fan or something :p Anyway, I just jammed the processor into the slot, with the fan still attached to it, which left me unable to lock the thing in place, or even insert it properly, thus ruining the thing.
At first I only planned on upgrading my videocard, and then found out I needed both a new motherboard and a powersupply, ending up with over twice the costs I had in mind, and now I'll have to get a bloody processor too, delaying my being able to use the pc, as well as costing me a bloody fortune ;(
[/DIARY], I suppose :d

Greetings

If the pins are just bent, and not broke, just bend them back to a vertical position. If some pins are broke the CPU might still work since not all pins actually do something, some are just "dummies" (well... not 100% true but still fairly accurate). Just be very careful while bending, so they dont break off. Might be worth a shot if you want to keep the CPU.

Regards
R.

Yeah, I'll give that another shot. I tried it before with a pocket knife, but that only got them bent further, as it's fairly hard to tell the difference between one pin and the other when sat in a room without proper lighting, with crappy tools :p Cheers tho ;)

Same thing happened to me, memory got destoryed, then i found out that it fucked my motherboard then found out i needed a bigger power supply for te motherboard, then i found out i needed a new case to fit my power supply in.

Straef,

Not sure if others posted this in this thread, however i read somewhere that it was possible to harvest an old processor chip for it's pins and put them in the processor chip you want to use.

<grins> although remember the triange always goes top left :p or right depending on how you are leaning over your pc. But i had a simular problem to you, the thermal paste (burned ???) onto the fan, i had to use a razor blade to pry it off!! then cleaned my chip and added new paste and volia it worked ;) i did not bend the pins though :p

I really feel your pain though as i too have just had to live with no pc for quite some-time and had to completely re-build from ground up :( Hope to have you back soon bud :)

Athlon 64 socket 939 has a bit of a problem with the heatsinks, if you want to replace the heatsink you can have the problem with the cpu being sticky'ed to it.

You can try to repair the cpu tho, the pins that are bent can be put straight again, you need to be carefull not to break them off, a pincet and some patience can make it work again. Offcourse i dont know how many pins you screwed up, but if its only a few its worth a shot.

There are also certain computer shops that repair broken cpu pins for a small cost, might want to give your shops a call if they do these kind of things, there arent many but its alot cheaper then buying a new cpu, it doesnt cost alot either.

Also on a sidenote, sometimes the cpu still works with broken pins, if your lucky its some of the less important pins that broke off, but your computer can become unstable when running heavyer applications, so if you really need to use the computer you still can but dont run any games on it.

Im talking about my own personall experience, i also was the unfortunate one that wanted to replace the heatsink with a better one and the cpu came out with it.
