I posted this on alt.games.half-life.counterstrike but got no response:
Hi I have a couple of problems, and there doesn't seem to be anyone else having these problems. Maybe the easiest problem to solve is the Voodoo2 SLI conumdrum.
My machine for your information is an overclocked iP-233 @ 300Mhz, 64mb PC100-mem (yeah too small but i don't have a job), 2x12mb Voodoo2 SLI'd @ 96mhz, a Live!1024 Soundcard, a SupraExpress 56i V Pro modem and 6 fans keeping the bloody thing cool
The SLI problem happens when the CS game loses focus (like I forget to disable ICQ) or gets returned to the menu system. I have found a workaround, which is unsatisfactory and that is to go to the Console via the menu system. The actual problem is losing one of the Voodoo2s' making for a
stripey display, and also losing all gamma correction in the process, making the game now unplayable forcing me to quit. I'm running the Voodoo2 OpenGL subset (3dfx32v2.dll) since the DirectX is atrocious as it was in the original HL.
The other problem is the connection, I like to play games with about 10 on each side, the only way to get that is to select the server you want to connect to. However, connecting is impossible (I haven't done it once) if I
select the server I want to go to. The only way I have managed to connect so far is to pick Quickstart and hope for the best, which usually means I get dumped in with about 3 other players and makes for an unsatisfactory game,
and even then it doesn't connect correctly:
If I pick the game directly from the Internet Game option, the game switches to the console and goes through the rigmorale of connecting to the server, it then starts to precache resources and after precaching resources it dumps
me back to the menu system with an error message stating 'Could not connect to game server. Reason: Could not complete connection attempt'.
However if I try to connect via Quickstart the game does what it does before, but after completing 'Precaching Resources', the game then connects with presumably the next server in it's list, and then if that allows it to connect then I can play the game. If the server is full or the game is locked then I have to find another server that I can connect to, precache etc. and then connect to the next one again. Basically I have to find two free servers next to each other.
This is CS1.0 which I downloaded about a week ago, and if this is the same as the retail version I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that there are so many apparent bugs in the game. Also a lot of the games I have played are plagued with cheaters as well - one game had a guy who with every shot managed to get a headshot which makes the practice of buying armour pointless, and another freely admitted to having a mod that made all opponents a bright green color even in if they were in shadows/dark making hitting easier. This is what killed me and my mates off Diablo I and why I never bought Diablo II, and if it wasn't for the fact that I bought and enjoyed HL, I wouldn't of considered CS - too much cheating. You got cheating in Q2, but never to this extent.
