1942 crashing problems

My brother (sigh) is having remarkable problems getting 1942 running. Now he's fairly computer literate, so rather than going round and fixing things for him, I thought I'd ask here first...

Machine: Win98 (maybe SE, can't remember), p3-1ghz, 256mb, geforce2 gts. Fairly decent, runs everything else he wants to. He knows its not top of the line and hence has turned detail off for everything. Gets problems like these:

------------

BF1942 - still not working despite:

Loading new Detonator graphics card drivers
Loading directX9.0a
Loading the BF1942 patch (latest)
Killing all unneccessary apps
Resizing the hard drive partitions to ensure at least 1.5GB free on the C: and D: drives

It gets a bit further than it did before but what is so frustrating is that it runs to the main menu, and all the way into the game past the briefing info to the start then drops out into windows without any error message! I even had it run into the game once (only) where I got into a tank started shooting a kraut only for it to crash!!

------------

Yes, this is single player - he's consigned to modem hell, hence got burnt a cd with the patch on.

Anyone have any ideas? I heard there were problems with the VIA chipset and '42 that caused things to implode and generally break... and short of hauling myself off my arse for some modem-tastic downloading, I have absoloutely no idea what else might break it. Now quake I could probably fix, but this...?

Cheers for all your (no doubt) useful suggestions...

Personally, I found that bf will fall over at the earliest opportunity if the RAM isn't 100% stable. IS the pc overclocked in anyway or speed settings changed in the BIOS?

Nope, its about as bog-standard as it gets. I've had some suggestions that its liable to be a sound problem... disabling (via DxDiag) the h/w sound acceleration appears to be a common line in fixing things. That and drivers.

Has anyone else had bad mojo with their sound and '42? (I only ask as mine's been fine from the day I installed it, curse working computers in all their finery.)

Get him to look at the logfile it'll hopefully point at what's causing it to break in a comedy style.

I recall theres a problem with the game not running at non-standard (ie 60hz) refresh rates, it will just go back to desktop like it didnt exist. Could be that ?
You can "allow all refresh rates 1 " somewhere in a file, sorry I cant be more specific Im at work atm and cant check .

probs

My m8 had the same sort of problem and this is what worked for him, some of it is the usual stuff and which one actually solved it is anybodys guess:
1.cleared out the registry of any junk
2.defraged hardrive
3.updated all drivers for chipset,soundcard,g.card
4.in the main game options turn all the sound options to low
The other thing is and has been mentioned before bf is the most mem hungry game ive ever seen ive heard of lots of peeps having to upgrade to 512 just to run it smoothly.

Also what made performance improve huge on my machine was to shutdown the anti-virus(Mcafee). it might be worth upgrading the OS I know with my old rig having 98SE didn't help, on my new rig I got ME but I shall upgrade to XP as soon as my new GF5200 arrives.

Now if someone else had asked that question do you think RV's responce would be:

a) FUCK OFF n00B

b) goto wwwDOTmybf1942doesn'tworkDOTcom

c) Not answer at all

Answers on a post card to..........

I had to put the DOTs in as game.net doesn't allow 'new' people to post URLs.

I woundn't even have a sub, if they hadn't extended it.
