Right I know this has been done before but I'm just interested in how many of you guys are now running 256MB RAM

I'm currently on 192MB running Windows 2000 and playing Quake 3 at the momment. I get RA2 tomorrow and hopefully Colin McCrae Rally 2 in December.

Just your thoughts would be cool as I'm surfing on www.dabs.com and just looking at prices etc. for another 64MB.

I doubt its worth it as i upgraded from 128 to 256 and didnt see much improvement. 64 to 128 was a great improvement tho :)

Id say get some after christmas when the prices fall even more! (or rise if youre real unlucky) :)

always get more ram... that's the spirit :)

I don't think that prices fall down soon... the dollar is rising up, petrol is rising up. So, don't expect Santa Claus to low down prices. It would be nice tough :)

128 to 256 doesn't make any real difference but if you can get it then might as well.

64MB will be about £45.

My systems specs:

C300A @450
Abit BH-6 motherboard
192MB RAM
Creative Labs GeForce DDR
SB Live 1024

Windows 2000

It would be money much better spent towards a new processor.

Yup, I agree. Or put towards a GeForce card. 192mb RAM is plenty for the forseeable future.

True, that isthe next thing I intend to get, P3 700 - slot 1 on 100Mhz FSB

It's just that £45 isn't much.

Going from 128mb to 256mb on a 9x system won't be that noticeable, it will however make a noticeable difference on w2k. I've just stocked up on ram so i can finally install w2k.

As for 196 to 256...who knows :)
Ram prices at Scan are pretty dirt cheap now. I picked up 196mb (3x64) for £100 inc vat/delivery last week. They've now got 128mb (1x128) for £70 + delivery.

It depends what you're using W2K for, then again that also applies to W9X. Many people can run W2K with 128MB easily since, while taking a larger base, it manages the RAM it has better than W9X.

Personally I'd upgrade it if you've got the cash. I went from 192 to 256 a while back in win98 and then converted to win me and noticed a big difference in both tbh. Try to make sure that your chips are the same size as each other though, e.g. 4 x 64 or 2 x 128. Other system hardware will effect the difference you see, but I'm a firm believer in "why have 192 when you can 256" :D
Whatever you decide to do, there are some good prices at

I'd also go with 'the more the better' m8.
And, once you've got lots, put as much in it as you can get away with. Remember that your memory is about a zillion times faster than your drives :)

It's best to stick to power of 2 with RAM. Generally for games your 192 will only be as good as 128, but to be honest the optimum on game boxes is generally no higher than 128 currently. I have 256 which will be handy when future games use it but you shouldn't lose sleep about it.

Yep, I've decided to leave it for now. Cheers for the input people.

I was playing Quake 3 last night on my rig and it rocked. 1152*864 fantastic. I should get Red Alert 2 today that SHOULD be fine. I'll probablly upgrade etc. for Colin Mcrae Rally 2 as I can see that as being a bit of a system killer. (Well on mine :(
