14fps full screen - 300 in a window!

hi peeps. I'm just building a new system, Gigabyte 7VAXP mobo, AMD XP 2100 & 512mb PC2100 with a ATI Radeon 8500LE.

I've got a weird problem. I fired up Q3 (having pulled the disk with it installed direct from my old pc) and when I run full screen (even at 640*480) i get about 14fps....yet if I switch to say 800*600 in a window I get about 300 fps !

Op/sys is windows XP with xp1. Updated bios from the net and downloaded latest ATI drivers + VIA 4-in-1 stuff...so I *think* i'm pretty up to date driver-wise.

any ideas....never seen anything like this before!

you probably don't want to hear this but have you considered reinstalling quake?

well...

i could do that...it's just a bit odd as the gfx card & disk are the same...so i wouldn't have thought it would need a re-install.

i'll give that a try if no-one can think of anything else ?

make sure you install the 4-in-1's after the ATI drivers, ATI for some reason only ship an Intel GART with their drivers (Graphics Adapter Remap Table) which leads to odd problems such as the above, install the ATI drivers and then the VIA.

thanks guys...not sure what did it...i re-installed the 4-in-1 (although I'm sure i'd done that after the ATI anyway)...still no difference...so I tried UT2003 demo, that was fine, went back into q3 and that is also fine now!

get >200 even on high qual at 1024*768...ooer.

it's a bit quicker than my p3 800

I don't get that and I have a better pc
