Right as some of you know I'm moving up to Windows 2000 or NT 4. What would you go for considering price etc. as RAM is on the way down again.

Is now the right time to buy!

I'm already on 64MB but this amount is just stupid!

Anyway

Prices are still quite high for 128mb+ after that jump a few weeks, (months?) ago...

But I can't see it dropping much more. I can get 128MB for £89 from the local computer blokey. It's PC100 Cas 2 etc.

I was running Quake3 on win2k with 128MB till recently and noticed quite a bit of disk paging whilst all the player models were loading at map start so I slapped in another 64MB and I now get into the maps with about 8-10 secs of the CTF countdown instead of the last 1-2 secs.

Also, when I die/pull down the scoreboard I get a lot less HD accessing as it loads deferred models.

i have 128 and its fine.

its good mem i think caus its pc 100 and it overclocks to 133 no probs, but anything over 112 FSB the mem has to be set to cas 3, which does'nt make much difference.

In Q3 it seems fine to me, i think you prolly have to tweak the machine to get better performance in Q3, like set it to network server, and have a permanant 300 meg swap file, works fine, normally get into Q3 servers faster than most.

Interesting point Frankie!

I've always found it strange that I am ALWAYS the first to spawn in a new game. I'm usually there about 5 secs before anyone else (though with the BW 'countdown' it doesn't make any difference). This even happens when I play on the Dallas CTF server, where my ping is usually 190 - 250.

Also, my 'Time' is sometimes 1 minute more than anyone else, which means the game only lasts 29 minutes!

This is with 256mb RAM, and hunks(?) set to 96 and a fixed swapfile size.

im thinking of getting one myself, but dont know if its worth it.

I can get it for 99 quid installation, and 20 a month rental from a local cable phone company, whacha reckon, is it worth it ?

what about download speeds ? with just the one line and whats it like with 2 ?

Well, my setup is this...
Home Highway £40 a month (with £15 free calls and 1p a minute every evening).Conversion is free if you have an existing BT line.
Claracall One for all £6.95 a month (1p a minute all day). You need a BT line for this.
BT Internet £11.95 a month with free 0800 access on weekends (though it's not always great).

Total £43.90 a month (if you take off the free calls). Calls are usually about £15 a month, so I'm paying about £59 a month...not too shabby for a half-decent ping).

I only use one channel for online gaming, as there doesn't seem to be any benefit in using 2. Plus, 2 channels costs 2 phone calls. My ping is usually around 50 - 70, though it depends on the dialup I use.

I was going to wait for xDSL, but I think I'll be retired by then! The BT surftime that starts in April will include Home Highway, so I'll ditch BT Internet then (unless they provide it). I have yet to work out whether keeping Claracall after that date will be worthwhile, but I expect they will respond with another scheme.

Download with one channel is about 7k sec, with 2 it goes up to about 10 (so not really worth it.

The biggest advantage, of course, is that ISDN has the same bandwidth in both directions, unlike modems, which transmit at 33.6 (even if they are V90). This means that you can update the server much quicker with your movements/actions. This alone makes for a much more satisfying game (I play TFC and UT as well

)

So, if you have an existing BT line, I'd say go for ISDN. Conversion is free (saving you £99 right off the bat) and, with the free calls, works out at £25 a month. Don't forget the 1p a minute in the evenings too (though I don't know what rate your Telco will charge you).

There...Hope that helps.

Hope to see you in the sights of my RL soon

128 meg is *enough* but the more the better... the performance diff between cas2 and cas3 is negligable... and 8ns PC100 ram will run cas2 fine at 100MHz
smile.gif

If you can afford 192, get that

frankie, your car will be knackered if u put subs in... rusty escorts dont take well to deep tones shakin em to bits

And at £49, bonus.

Next up a new case - Aopen Hx08. Then that's it for 4 months or so. I've got to fund the other things, girlie, life, tunes and let us not forget HOMELANDS on the 27th May in Winchester. I can't wait! And it's only Feb
