117 killed my machine

I have tried to take the Q3 1.17 point release several times now and each time it causes my machine to black screen when I launch Q3. If I press Alt-F4 I can get back to my desktop OK. The exact error message is:-

Loading dll file ui.
Failed to load dll, looking for qvm.
Loading vm file vm/ui.qvm.
VM file ui compiled to 902626 bytes of code
recursive error after: User Interface is version 3, expected 4

My setup is Voodoo2 (Monster2) & using latest drivers from Diamond site. 2D is S3 Virge 3C 375/385 if it matters.

Has anyone seen this before? The only way I can get Q3 to work again is to reinstall - duh!.

Any assistance would be greatly received.

it worked fine for me ........

its sounds like
A) the patch in not installing properly
B) you have some weird mod installed which has messed stuff up.

i suggest renaming existing q3a dir, so a clean install, then patch it straight away. if that works re-add u mods one by one and see what happens.

tbh i found the wickedGL drivers to be LESS stable that the 3dfx ref drivers (try them), but they are QUICKER so u pays u money and takes u choice .....

Are you using the 1.16 dlls?

when i tried to them with 1.16 i got the same message ( but on a banche - unlucky me)

the three files are:-

uix86.dll
qagamex86.dll and
cgamex86.dll

if U have them try either deleting them or renaming them

Thanks for the replies guys. 117 is now behaving OK. I did have to rename the q3 directory and do a fresh install as suggested by sjb.. many thanks. I'll have a go with the wicked3d drivers.. if they cause problems is it easy to go back? Thanks again to all who replied.
