0800 access and online gaming

Is free 0800 internet access having an adverse effect on online gaming for modemmers, well Quake/UT/HL online to be specific.

Im sure we all welcomed free internet access and monthly phone bills in tens of pounds instead of hundreds but in retrospect I would sooner be paying more and having the fun I used to have when playing online.Connections are pants compared to this time last year and as a result I havent played more than 20 hours online since Q3 was released.I used to rack up 4-6 hours a night!!!

So until broadband access becomes widely available I'm stuck with playing bots. Not such a bad thing tho as Im getting my skills up (only have q3dm17/q3dm18 to do on nightmare).

This isnt just a q3 thing, (we all know that sucks for modem) but having played q2 online for nearly 2 years I know what to expect from modem play and popping onto RA2 last night just confirmed that its going belly up (the connection, not the mod :)).

Is it just me, or is 'free' downloading of mp3's/porn/warez, and the net congestion that causes, killing off online quake for modemmers in the uk.

if you were to do it on web it shouldnt take long
but over phone etc you have to be registered with ezesurf 0845 service, which is free, and then choose your username for the 0808 number when you sign up the same as yhe 0845 name, and pass

i idid it by cheqe, took ages

My view of 0800 net access is that it was designed for those who want light-medium weight email+news+HTML, not those who use the heavier-duty UDP-based programs such as games. I would also avoid any ISP that requires the inserting of a CD into my system, since reversing the process is a nightmare.
