The interactive #FH.WoW FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Anyone is welcome to add to this FAQ or amend the answers below if they're incorrect, just thought I'd start one off since there doesn't seem to be one posted and i'm seeing lots of questions being asked repeatedly

What is a FAQ?

A FAQ contains the most 'Frequently Asked Questions' about a given topic. Clicky for more examples of Internet acronyms

Beta

When is the European Final Beta?

It's on now, if you have a beta key, go play! If not, look forward to playing in retail in a month or so.

What happened to the EU open beta?

Blizzard have announced that the final stage of the EU beta is available only to people who preordered WoW through approved retailers (clicky for the list) so if you haven't preordered or did so from a retailer who doesn't garantee the beta disc/key, don't be expecting to join the final beta. Anyhow, it should only last a month at best and you'll be looking forward to a probable character wipe at the end of it anyway)

Someone told me the beta discs are all sold out, can I still find them somewhere?

I can only speak for the UK personally, but there are Game stores that if you go in and ask, may have a few in stock. Others say there are lots, it's all luck of the draw I suppose. As far as online pre-orders go, word is that they're sold out.

When are Gameplay/Game going to send me my disc? The beta's almost upon us!

Your guess is as good as mine in all honesty, i'm waiting for them too, although there has been mention of Gameplay not sending their discs out until just before the new year. Don't fret though, you should receive it before the final beta begins...hopefully :p

Where can I download the EU Beta client?

Alternative

Can I use the US open Beta client for the EU final beta?

Last I know, no...neither will US retail into the EU final beta or EU retail from what i've been told or looked at. However, if for some odd reason you want to try it anyway the steps are below (disclaimer; This will likely not work so if you b0rk your install don't blame me, ta)

- Find the file named 'realmlist.wtf' in the main WoW directory (default <drive letter>:\Program Files\World of Warcraft) with Notepad
- replace the line 'set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com' with 'set realmlist eu1.wow.battle.net' (excluding the '')

Props to Conchaber for consolidating here

What's the newest version of WoW?

1.2.1 is currently the most up to date version of WoW.

Retail

When will WoW be released in Europe dammit?

Most accurate date so far would be sometime between 16th and 20th Feb (going from the ship date gameplay have as official partners of blizzard in the preorder campaign, though anyone who knows Blizzard should realise this may not be true ;))

If I order the US version can I still play from the EU?

Yes, although in the initial months of the US release Blizzard are trying to dissuade people living in the EU from joining the US servers by insisting on Visa cards having an attached US address (not verified), this can probably be circumvented through use of gamecards however...

Servers

What's the difference between PvE and PvP servers?

PvE servers are primarily Players fighting the AI monsters in the realm, with doses of PvP existing as part of the ongiong war between the Horde and Alliance. The PvP servers are effectively total war between the factions.

What?

PvP servers have zones labeled as being contested, this means that in these zones anyone hunting is liable to be attacked by players of the opposite faction, look forward to being ganked by high level players and/or groups, because this will happen. Also look forward to getting your own back on the very same players in the future ;). While nubian zones exist for the younger characters, these are no safer from incursion than any other zone, hunt carefully!

PvE servers do not have these contested zones, with PvP being voluntary, meaning that both parties give their consent to attack the opposite faction and be attacked via the /pvp command which flags the player as being available for PvP duels/battles etc, this tag lasts 5 minutes or 5 minutes from the last aggressive action made against another player (last I know).

Can I attack my own faction on PvP or PvE servers?

No, but why would you want to ... ;)

Some tips for new players...

PROFESSIONS
You can have two of these trade skill professions. I would heartily recommend that at least one of them be linked to the mobs you are commonly hunting. If you are hunting mostly humanoid creatures (they drop cloth) go the tailor route; if you are hunting mostly animals then become an animal skinner. You can make decent money fairly quickly that way, which is important as skills are bought.

TRAVEL
When entering a new city or town lookout for the local travel centre -- as you find new ones on the same continent you will make a network of places that can be easily travelled to, without having to walk everywhere.

QUESTING
Fill your quest book up - often you will find multiple quests linked to the same group of mobs, or found in the same locale. With a little bit of planning you can finish multiple quests at the same time. Which is good because questing (at least into your 30's I hear) is much better than simply grinding - some quests have been known to give 10-15% of the xp you need for a whole level.

TRAINING YOUR SKILLS AND PETS
Don't be too quick to train every new skill straightaway, particularly if money is tight, you may find that a better skill is now available on another trainer which could have been a better use of that precious silver.

How do skills and talents work?

SKILLS:
These are bascially 2 types of skills: Weapons, and Abilities

Weapons: (Swords, staves, wands, maces, etc)
Weapon skills have a current value, and a max value.
Eg, your MAce skill may be 50/90 - 50 is your current skill, 90 is the max.
The max value increases each level, and the only way to improve is by using your mace in combat. The same goes for all weapons. You can train for various weapons depending on your class - however, there is nothing stopping you, as a warrior, from having max'ed out every single weapon skill (sword, axe, 2H sword, mace, whatever). These skills, to my knowledge, only affect your to hit ratio, and they may (can anyone confirm?) increase the chance of you hitting for your weapons max damage..

Abilities (spells, special moves, etc)
These are baseline skills available to every class, and each class has 3 ability lines (eg, for priest: http://www.thottbot.com/index.cgi?c=Priest&sort=skill&sort2=skill)
So you can get almost every class skill available, if you have the money to train it. Yes, thats right. Training costs money - but that's it.... there's no skill points involved. At level 60, as a Warrior, Priest, Shaman, you will have every skill available to you (if you bought it).

So won't this make every character identical?
Well, on top of skills to define your characters abilities, there are Talents.

TALENTS:
Talents add extra spice to your character - think of them like realm points in DAOC, except you get one every level from level 10 onwards, giving you a max of 50 at level 60.

These can improve your abilities, skills, damage, resists, cast time, or what not, depending on how you use them. You may even gain new abilities and spells if you use them in a certain way.

Each class has 3 talent trees, one for each type of skill type.
Priests have Holy, Discipline, and Shadow Magic,
Warriors get Arms, Fury and Protection,
Etc etc

Putting Talents in holy, as a priest, will increase the effectiveness of your healing skills. Putting points in shadow will make your shadow spells more effective. Discipline can improve your abilities overall. And so forth.

This allows you to customise your character to how YOU play... so if you're into big PvE raids, you might want invest in Talents that limit the amount of aggro you generate, unless you're a tank, in which case the opposite might aply. It's all up to you.

You can respec your talents at your trainers, the first time it's quite cheap, second time a bit more, and eventually it reaches 50g (currently), where it stays. 50g is a lot of money :)

-----
Hope this helps, if anyone wants me to add to / modify it, send me a PM :)

Nice info - thanks :)

But.... the links to download the client seem to be pointing to the 1.1.2 version. I thought that the Euro client couldn't be patched to 1.2.1 and required a full client download (sure I read some whine on the forums about this)? Any links to the full version of the current client?

Download 1.1.2, log in with a meaningless user/pass (dsfoh/sdfohds for example) and it'll download the 40 meg patch to 1.2.0. It'll then apply that. Log in again, it'll download the few hundred k to 1.2.1.

In short, 1.1.2 is fine.

Nice info, but talents lines are more easily compared with speclines in daoc. ;)

Well, speclines are in WoW, they're skills (abilities). Except there's no max limit on them, so you can master all 3 spec lines, should you have the money.
;)
