Guys,

Cars just broken down and looks like the engine may be seized up + radiator knackered.

Where do I stand with the insurance - will it cover mechanical failure of the car to an extent where it isnt viable to repair?

No.

What car is it? Sounds like its overheated, in which case the engine may be recoverable.

bugger!

its a Mitsubishi Spacewagon

Should I quickly get the car to the top of a steep hill and crash into something?

If the engine is junked, it would be cheaper to buy another and fit it.

They're not expensive, maybe £500, maybe cheaper, depends on the age of the vehicle.

Any competant mechanic could swap an engine out. Just get it checked over first, and find the problem. If you've had a coolant leak (head gasket), then it will have overheated and you may get away with just buying a replacement cylinder head. If its lost oil and siezed, then you need a new engine.

If it isn't worth that much, then either sell it for parts, or scrap it and buy another car.

If the car was new / 2/3 yrs old you might be covered under manufacturerererers warranty but if it was your own fault - i.e didnt have any water in the cooling system etc - then you might be screwed. If your car is much older then I doubt your insurance will cover it (unless you were fully comp and had an incredible insurer - which I doubt)

Repair probably is ya best option - I would be careful about wrapping it round a tree at the bottom of teh hill etc - Insurers do look into these things*...

(ask a friend of a friend of mine who is looking at a jail term currently for a false claim on a motor - tis a long story and granted involved a bit more but once they pay out its insurance fraud etc as well...)
