LONDON Jeremy Clarkson’s future with Top Gear was shrouded in confusion last night as the presenter dropped hints that he might leave the motoring programme.

The blunt-speaking frontman said the BBC show would not return for a new series in the summer. Writing in a national newspaper on Saturday, Clarkson said: “After last week’s Top Gear, the continuity announcer said the show would be back in the summer. “Can I just say, here and now, it won’t be.”

This was contradicted by the BBC, which said there was no doubt that the show would return with its original presenters — Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. A spokesman said: “ Top Gear will come back. A summer special is planned and Top Gear will return in the autumn.” Clarkson was not available to comment.

Lets see what happens..

I saw the end of the last episode where Jeremy said he didn't know when they would be back.

I don't watch it avidly but if I happen to flick through the channels and see Top Gear I think cool, Top Gear and watch it. I hope it does keep going.

Fucking disgrace if the BBC let it die, one of the few programs worth paying the licence fee for.

A cynic (unlike takes-things-as-face-value me, of course) might point out that Clarkson's a Times columnist and TV contract-negotiations generally happen between series.

Yep, its all contract negotiations. The BBC won't kill that programme, its very popular and a good little money-spinner.

Even if Clarkson leaves the show should still go on - granted Jezza is a big part of it but sometimes a change can be a good thing, maybe try n bring Quentin back and let Hammond do more of the funny stuff.

Contract stuff imo.

They do have to find a new location however, as Dunsfold Park is being redeveloped.

I do like Clarkson, but wonder how the last series would have faired without the Hammond hype...

Anyways, Top Gear without Clarkson leading the team would be like....a hen night with a eunuch striptease show -

Several people are saying it's a mis-quote. I hope it is, Top Gear is one of the few TV shows i watch these days.

I point out top gear flopped the last time jezza left, and then they got him back with an all new team (hammond and may) and it took off again. So If clarkson does leave the bbc may well give up

At the studio filming for the last episode of this series he said "see you on ITV".

But he always makes that joke, so I doubt there is any truth, as I said, just contract stuff.

Top Gear is a perfectly valid format without JC though. There are any number of car mad presenters waiting in the wings. Robbie Coltrane is mad for engineering. Quentin Wilson is an excellent presenter, although not really host material. Noel Edmunds, its a shame hes carved out the family man image as he is a massive petrolhead. Just as long as the job (if available) went to somebody who is actually interested in cars, and not just somebody who likes presenting.

JC has become a bit of a parody of himself of late. Its a shame, as when you read his motoring column in the Sunday Times its always a funny and thought provoking read.

Top Gear and Clarkson are old.

I'm tired of Top Gear now, this whole chat about it being pulled or Clarkson not hosting just reinforces what i've been feeling for some time now.

The whole "make a limo" thing? Please..., absolute toilet

Edit: and this is my opinion, and i used to love TG and i still love cars - but TG has just lost it i'm afraid

Clarkson has been quoted in the past about how fed up he is with the BBC pissing the series around (scheduling, etc..) - could very well be a negotiating tactic tbh.

Nope, hes a boring charisma-less **** who should take a major part of the blame for the demise of the original TG.

Without JC the show would die in a year just like the original did.

The original programme died because the then controller of BBC2 didn't like car programmes, and killed it.

Which turned out to be a silly decision since Top Gear was at that time still BBC2's most popular programme.

It had very little to do with Clarkson leaving.

Ratings on the original had dropped down the toilet and were continuing to do so.

It wasnt so much killed as euthanised.

Quentin Wilson is fucking dreadful.

I will not watch it if he goes back on it, him and that Vicky Butler-Henderson or whatever her fucking name is are the worst presenters in the world EVER

Ratings dropped because the show was mercilessly butchered by the same controller.

I liked the old TG. At least they used to show you cars that you can actually afford to buy.

The new TG is just FHM on the Telly

Personally I like a variety with Top Gear.

The messing around is fun, reviews are fun (both cheap cars and expensive ones), the races are fun and the challenges are fun.

Keeping a balance is best, perhaps not equal, can still be biased in favour of Races/Challenges/Messing around, but not so there are no reviews ever.

JC just likes being over-dramatic, he said after Hammond's crash eh didn't think Top Gear wouldn't be back at all, yet we've just had one of the funniest series yet.

It'll be back with all 3 presenting I'm sure. Just maybe not in summer.

I heard he was just trying to be a politically correct twat ;p Saying it won't be back in Summer, it will actually be back in Autumn.

Thats not being politically correct. Thats being a pedant or arguementative, he'd fit in well here.

They should take him out back and shoot him. It's the humane thing to do.

err, wait, sorry.

Top Gear is aceness, although they went a bit O.T.T. with challenges and shit last series. Not enough cars. It's still the funniest thing on television though.
